Seat belts

I've got a 97 burban that just going to be a mud truck, so I wont be needing the seatbelts anymore. I've been thinking about putting them in my '68. I would like to at least get one of the lap belts for the middle so I can haul three people safely in my truck, and also if possible get the three point seatbelts, atleast the driver's side anyway, anybody done this? How would I attach the lap belt,? could I use the existing bolts on the floor of the truck or would I need new bolts so I don't exceed some kinda rating? and how bout the three point? no idea where to start there. thanks yall!

Re: Seat belts

I do suggest going with the three point set up, on a 72 cab theirs a upper support for a 3 point belt maybe you could cut one out and weild it in you're cab; maybe you could rob one from a later year model doner vehicle. On you're cab cut a "window" in the sheet metal where the third point connection will be you may have to engineer a brace to weild a threaded nut to bolt to, if you could'nt rob one from a doner vehicle. I suggest opeaning the doner up first and get an idea what it will intell to properly install and reinforce a thread/mount that would support a upper seat belt mount. I have a 71 cab that already had the upper hitch point in it from the factory I guess they were getting ready for the 72 year models that had the factory three point belts.

Re: Seat belts

I just put 3-points into my 68, using Wesco belts.

Juliano's also has similar belts and instructions.

I took my lapbelt and used the existing holes/bolts to lace it down. I've got two males for free waiting for homes.

Re: Seat belts

My 68 has upper mounting points. I've heard that s10 belts bolt right in, I was looking at a 90's suburban the other day and it looks like they would bolt up too. Let us know how it turns out!

Re: Seat belts

Most of the parts houses carry a 3pt belt system for our trucks, as far as the center belt i would have just bolted it to the existing bolts and never second guessed it, but i guess you could reinforce the floor if concerned.

A large washer reinforces well, the price is usually right, and it's what the factory uses.

Re: Seat belts

ixnay, Does your truck have the gas tank in the cab? I'm just curious about having enough room for the retractor on the drivers side. Thanks!

I didn't see this a year ago. Sorry for the late response. Yes, I have a tank in the cab. There is room below, of course, for the middle belt. I had the upper corners tapped for the should harness, and there is just enough room on the side for the retractor housing. Yes it's tight, and you need to jerk on your seat belt to make it retract fully, but that's a small inconvenince for not crushing your head and chest in an accident.

I've attached photos. You might consider getting longer belts if that is an option. These fit me, but the females barely come through the seat from the floor. And for heftier people, the males don't work as well. I used the old belt for the center, so I can take my daughters with me when I go bouncing around.
