Re: help id this trans/transfercase

Your transfercase is the NVG 263 HD GM. Which is the New Venture Gear 263 Heavy Duty transfercase mainly used in 2001-2004 Gm 2500HD and 3500HD trucks. It is similar to the NVG 261 t-case but seems to be a stronger design. As for the transmission if it is the automatic and it was behind the Duramax it will be the Allison 5 speed or if it was behind the gas engine it would be the 4L80E, if it is the manual trans it will be the NV4500. Hope this helps.

Re: help id this trans/transfercase

I do not believe there is a tag however GM used to stamp 4L80 in the bell-housings if it is not a removable bell-housing. If it is a 4L80E it does not look much different on the outside than most of GM's automatics, if it is the Allison the trans is large in comparison to any GM automatic and it will have Allison stamped in the side as well as an external spin on filter next to the pan at what would be the drivers side front corner if the trans was in the truck. These are the only two automatics GM used with the transfercase.
