Re: Is anyone still running the original generator?

Did until 2000. Switched over to altenator, sold my two working generators (I always carried a spare in case it puked in the boonies) for $15 to a tri-five restoration guy.

Re: Is anyone still running the original generator?

I've still got the generator on mine but mine is in the middle of a restoration and hasn't seen more than 2 miles in the last 20 years.

Re: Is anyone still running the original generator?

I carried brushes and bearings in the glove compt. for years, Then when the generator did fail, it was a shorted field coil. Didn't have that in the glove compt. I had to turn on everything to keep from boiling the battery. The 'ol volt meter was reading 17 volts unloaded, and 15 volts with headlights, heater, wipers on a dry windshield, foot on the brake to make the stoplights go on, and the original radio all workin'.
I got a one wire alternator the next day. I used a corvette alternator bracket in aluminum.

Re: Is anyone still running the original generator?

I couldn't begin to tell anyone when the last time I ran a generator on anything of my own was. Probably the 55 Ford Sedan that we had that my wife drove to work for a few months in the early 70's.

I'm building a little roadster with a flathead six in it that may keep the generator to keep the car a bit more period correct but it won't have anything on it that draws power except a little box style heater that hopefully will take a bit of the chill off cool mornings and evenings. a hundred miles one way will probably be the longest road trip it ever makes too unless it is on it's trailer behind the 48.

A generator does have one advantage over an alternator though. You can push start a car with a stone dead battery with a generator as it will charge without having any voltage to it to excite it like an alternator needs.

Still got one on mine. Im about to rewire the beast though, then ill probably go to a powermaster look a like or something, since the motor will be dressed in early vette garb.

Re: Is anyone still running the original generator?

I'm running a generator on mine. I plan to update to a polished alternator at some point but its not a priority. Truck's not a daily driver and it has NOTHING; well almost nothing, electrical to run. No radio, don't drive it with the lights on cause I virtually never drive it at night.

Air cleaner has since been changed to matching finned unit and firewall, inner fenders redone in black. But the generator is still there.

Re: Is anyone still running the original generator?

Oh, P.S. Double hump heads so no holes in the heads for the typical mounts. I've heard there are sources for brackets that do NOT use holes in the heads, but I could use advice or links if anyone has good ones.

Thanks so much. I'll be studying the website. Anyone else know of a source for brackets? I was hoping for something to mount down low whereas these all appear to mount prominantly up high. That'll work for me I'd just like to make the alternator and AC compressor much less noticeable.

Check with Bill's Hot Rod shop in Covina, I have used his brackets and pulleys on all my projects

@ Dan in Pasedena

Is your motor the 235? I may have a generator bracket? I will have to dig through my stuff. I'm not sure if I have a bracket with my spare generator or not.

Let me know....
