Some pics of my '72...

Here is the '72 I picked up about a month ago. It was my dad's truck many years ago, then my grandpa's, then my uncles, now it is mine. I got it for $100.

The only bad rust is on the rocker panels, the rest is pretty much solid(except for the rear bumper, which you can see in the pic). It is a 350 with a 350 auto.

I am having some problems trying to get it running properly right now, but it will be rebuilt soon anyway. It needs a lot of work, but it will be a very nice truck when finished.

Looks like you have a pretty solid foundation to start with. Plus, its a family truck...even better. As far as the rockers being rusted, it happens to them all. Im in the process of replacing almost the entire flood board on my 67. As far as my 40, I had to find 4 different trucks to make 1. But its a lot further along than the 67. By the way, welcome to the board.

Good start on your project and better yet it's a family heirloom.

It will probably be a couple years before it is complete. But it's not like I am throwing my money away, it will never go down in value. Unlike people that dump $10k into motors for their dodge neons...

This project should be a lot of fun. I am getting ready to pull the box off soon to start working on that. I tried to get the tailgate off, but it won't come off! Aren't they designed the same as the 73-87 trucks? I can't seem to pull one side out, it's stuck.

Chevelle:

In the course of fixing up your old truck you will find a lot of things are not like the newer models. You've heard the old saying: "They don't make 'em like they used too".

You found one already...the tailgate removal process.

1) You must first lower the gate to the point where you can lift the supporting rod UP at it's joint in order to line up the slot where it connects with the tailgate..so it can be slipped off of the gateitself..

2) Then, on one side of the bed, you will have to remove the two bolts that holds the trunion (the round hinge thingy) to the bedside.

3) After disconnecting BOTH supports and ONE trunnion...the gate will pull off.

I hope this helps.

I am going to take it down to the frame and have it sandblasted and repainted, and refinish it piece by piece. The exterior will be all original, but I think I want to have bucket seats and a center console in the cab. Maybe even a small TV built into the console...
