Speedo Cable Connection

I'm spending days chasing down fluid leaks. The trans (a 350) has been juicing all over the place ever since I made a lame rookie move and tried to fill it before I put in the driveshaft.
But, that's old news. The drive shaft's in. New seals in the transmission.

But more fluid keeps showing up. I *may* have it focused in after about a zillion trips under there.

The speedo cable has that knurled knob covering a flared tube which surrounds the "moving" cable itself. The knurled knob tightens down on a threaded fitting on the trans...
...or a fitting that bolts in to the trans that accepts the square "moving cable".

I don't seem to be able to get the knurled knob really tight. Threads are good. The knob screams for channel locks. But even with using them, the knob doesn't seem tight.

I was wondering if there is supposed to be a gasket or o-ring in there that would close the gap between the flared tube and the knurled knob.
I ask, because there seems to be some juice appearing at the gap.

Thanks.

No gasket or O-ring there it sounds like you may need a speedo housing. The threads have gotten messed up somehow and there is your leak. On the good side, it should'nt be to expensive or time consuming to fix. Pull out the speedo cable look at the trans end good thats were you need to look

No gasket or o-ring in the part you have labeled. However there is one in the part you're screwing the cable to. IIRC it's inside where the speedo gear plugs into the back of it. And this part is called the speedo gear housing which has an o-ring seal on the outside of it. Unbolt the housing and pull it straight out. The speedo gear should come out with it.

Re: Speedo Cable Connection

I had the same problem and found out years ago if you get one spec of debris in the area where you screw in the cable it will leak and drip. what I do when replacing or reinstalling a trans (350 turbo) is to make sure threads and area where fitting is flared is clean by spraying it with carb clean along with the threads on the tranny nine times out of ten it will fix it. I know this sounds to easy to over look but is true. It must be clean the flared part along with the threads male and female try it you will be suprised. I struggled with this many years ago on my cars and others who have brung them over for me to fix. And there is no o-ring. Hope this helps you. If it is cross threaded all bets are off for it not leaking. when I say flared part I mean where the threaded sleeve that spins on the flare of the cable that is the most important part to clean.

Re: Speedo Cable Connection

Thanks, Everyone!

The threads are good. I bought a speedo housing with O-ring off of E-Slay just now. I'm going to go under with carb cleaner, the housing,
probably a 7/16 wrench...I'll take a couple of wrenches ....and white gloves.

If the trans leaks after that, it'll be from some other place...Hahahaha!!!

Thanks to all.
I love this Forum.
