New power steering hoses when replacing gear box?

I bought a replacement gearbox and the instructions say that it's very important to change the hoses as well. Is this necessary? The instructions say that the hoses can rot from the inside out and can contaminate the new gear box.

Re: New power steering hoses when replacing gear box?

I replaced the pump and the hoses when I installed my new steering box. The hoses are cheap. The pump is a few bucks but I did it anyway beacuse it was nice to know the whole system was NEW and didn't have any old dirt or fluid in it... Unless you hoses are realitively new, I would replace them and flush the PS pump with clean fluid before assembling the system as minimum...

Yeah, they're cheap, but not available locally. I have my front end torn apart, and need it back together for work on Monday. Would it hurt anything to bolt up the old hoses until new ones come in the mail?

Probably would not hurt, but if you could flush the entire system it might help. I've used clean diesel or kero to flush. Get as much of the diesel/kero out as possible, fill with atf.

HTH..good luck...don t. ....
