My 68 swb 350/350 with a 185 lb. driver tipped the scales at 3590lbs.

That's the funny thing, the weight varies so much in these rigs...
My 69 SWB fleet side witha small block and TH350, and soime weight reducing items tips the scales just shy of 4000 pounds...and that's after my fat ass gets out.

I see that you live in Calif.. Home of the rip off weight fees to DMV. Do what you have to to get your truck under 4000 pounds. There is a big jump in your fees from 3999 to 4000. Take out the seat, the tailgate, spare tire, playboys under the seat, empty beer cans in the back,the bumpers, and anything else that you can do without when you get it weighed. Ive had big blocks come in under 4000 when I was in the wonderful sunshine state! Its worth the work since you are paying about 1000% more to register your truck than in any other state. Here in Oregon, NO SMOGS on any year and the fees for the tags are $30 for TWO years! Such a deal. Also no sales tax. Time to think about moving!

FWIW -
I just bought a load of trap rock over in Wisconsin at the Dresser Trap Rock Quarry. The last time I went over there I told you guys my 1/2 ton, 4x4, 1971 chassis with 1970 body, 350, TH350 weighed in at 4980. This time it was only 4860.

On the way home I did some quick math. The 90 pound lab wasn't with (owner too lazy to put seat cover on seat), I lost 10 pounds working on the new house (165 vs. 175), my saddle tank was empty, and my seat tank wasn't full. At $9/ton I wasn't going to argue about +/- 20 pounds.

If your truck is street legal, and driveable, i would take it to a scale and get an acurate number. A number that will represent how it will be driven most of the time. (do you carry tools, or 4 spare tires? do you weigh 300 pounds? Does your wife/girl friend weigh 300 pounds? Ect)
I only say this becouse the weights of these trucks seem to vary by a fairly wide margin, and if you go by my heavy weight, and your's is a light weight...your custom job on your weights and stuff won't be worth much...it could be way off.
Just a thought.

One that I scaled often hauling scrap, was a 71 1/2 ton ,with an 8' step box. it went between 3800 & 3900 lbs empty .....less driver. my longhorn tips the scales @ 4040, less driver & about 1/2 tank of fuel......shes pretty damn stripped tho! As far as the springs on the recurve.....if it spark rattles, go heavier & vice/ versa. A lot really depends on gearing as well as the weight, & the only way I know is to "play" with the curve to get it right for your app. Good luck,crazyL

Mine weighs 3980 w/o me in it and a bone dry tank of gas. Put me in it, some tools, a full tank of gas, and passenger and it weighs more like 4600 lbs. I think it needs to go on a diet, lol.
