327 SB 1406 Edelbrock on Performer Q Jet manifold
Just going over specifications of my 59 Apache 3100, bought from the guy who imported it from Texas. Body and engine in good condition, but unknown amount of work done.
The Edelbrock 1406 has been converted to manual choke, presumably as the electric model runs leaner. The Edelbrock Performer Q Jet is recommended to have higher cfm (? 700 +) carb than the 600 cfm provided by the 1406. Certainly seems to run wet, fuel smell noticeable. I don't know if any internal work was done to the SBC 327 V8; and haven't done any dyno work. I use the truck to go to work a few days per week, and cruising. I am interested in any feedback on this setup. TIA Scott |

A 600CFM carb should be about perfect for a 327 unless the engine is moderately modified. A 700CFM may make more peak power, but the 600 will have better all around drivability.

Are you running ported vacuum or full vacuum for the vacuum advance?

Changing from electric to manual choke shouldn't affect the running of the engine or function of the carb. The choke change will not make it run or not run lean. The choke richens up the mixture. When either version of choke is open---It will have no affect. You said it runs "wet". I don't know what that means. Is it dumping fuel?

Jeff
my opinion on how the carb runs +/- electric choke came from reading about the edelbrock carbs; I think it said the manual choke models run 2% lean compared with the electric choke models. 'Wet' is my way of describing how she seems to run a bit rich, but that is probably a characteristic of the engine. There is a fuel smell when she's running. Haven't done the mpg because the speedo is not accurate. Will have to do a run over a known distance one day to work it out. I really don't care about fuel economy, as she runs well. I'm just out to make the most of what I have got already. cheers Scott |

Re: 327 SB 1406 Edelbrock on Performer Q Jet manifold
I have run many 1406 carbs and am very happy with them. My 57 presently has a 1405 manual choke. A 600 CFM carb is more than enough carb for a 327 displacement. I have my 600 CFM carb on a 400 Pontiac Big Block and I would not go any larger. Keep what you have, if it runs well and is reliable to start and runs well at idle I would not change a thing.
