How much Fuel are you Pumping

Hi guys ive recently purchased a 1985 chevy 4x4 shortty for a winter runner.
350 with a carter on it
3 speed manual with granny gear

The truck was running flawless when i bought it.

recently it has gave me a few hickups but this one i cant seem to figure out.

The truck will idle on startup if i prime it. when i rev it up it revs good and has power but as soon as it starts to drop back down to idle it kills.

try and restart starts fine and idles as soon as i give it anything it kills. wont run under power either enless throttle is wide open.

have replace the fuel filter. re built the carb checked for vacum leaks.

so am i just not getting fuel? i bought a plastic see through fuel filter and it seems like there is no visible fuel in it when it is idleing.

how much fuel is going through your fuel filter at idle and when reved? pics?

tomorrow i am going to hook a line up to the fuel pump inlet and try to see if it runs when its of the main tank.

i do have a new one on order 22 bucks? for one sound far off?

make sure your choke is engaging or force it to engage. give it about one half pump of fuel it should start right up. bring it above idle for about 1 minute. then shift into the gear you need and give it slight gas to keep it above idle. this method always works for me.

Fuel filter should be pretty much full of fuel

Re: How much Fuel are you Pumping

if the filters totally empty, you probably have a too hot fuel line. is the stock metal line from the pump to the carb still there? if so, get the truck warmed up and then run some cold water over the fuel line. if the filter starts to fill up with liquid while your pouring water over it, your fuel lines getting too hot and needs to be insulated.

When I first start mine, its totally full of fuel when cold. even with it insulated, the fuel warms up enough that it has a little air in it after a hot drive. I used that woven fiberglass insulation on mine. worked wonders.

i know my filters empty in this pic, i hadnt run it yet after installing the new hardline.

Re: How much Fuel are you Pumping

I'm guessing you have a hole in the diaphram of your fuel pump...

Re: How much Fuel are you Pumping

still the steal line. but i don't think it is heating up that much right away on start up. the manifolds aren't even that hot. when it is doing this. idles till i rev it then it drops back down and kills.

could the choke be stuck closed?

seems like it isnt getting enough fuel to me. even at idle it is rough and not consistant like its getting more fuel at times than others idle is up and down...

idk hope i can get it fixxed got to be driving the truck daily soon dont want the 69 to suffer the salt...

good thing i have one on order. i'm gonna try to bypass the fuel tank and hook a hose right up to the fuel pump and into a gallon of fuel.. to determine if the fuel pump is bad.

Re: How much Fuel are you Pumping

really need to put a fuel pressure guage on the outlet side to check for fluctuations in pressure to check the fuel pump, but all that would cost about the same as the fuel pump, so...
