Another ?? Steering coupler
I have a 68 c10 with ram assisted power steering. From what i understand it still uses the manual steering gear box. I ordered a new steering coupler rag joint assembly. I can't get it to go on like the old one.
I have heard that power steering and manual steering have two different sized rag joints. So I ordered the manual steering rag joint assembly, do to that fact I think i have a manual steering gear box. I look a close look at the new one and I noticed that there is a section that is not splined. So i dont know if I ordered the wrong one or if this one is defective. |

Re: Another ?? Steering coupler
That is a master spline so it won't go on but one way . Also be careful I think the rag is dirrernt for 68 than 69-72, I know the shaft is[intermediate that is]

Re: Another ?? Steering coupler
Your pic shows a D style coupler. THey also make a double D and smooth types. You want a splined type coupler which has teeth all around. Yours could have 36 or 48 splines. You'll need to count them to be sure.

30 splines in the one in the pic. Or your original.
My info comes from the CPP catologue. Maybe post a pic of your old one. |

Re: Another ?? Steering coupler
30 spline is my old one. With no flat spot. I tried calling Truck and car shop but some one has to call me back for technical crap. Still haven't heard from them. Looks like they might just get it back.

Re: Another ?? Steering coupler
I went through the same thing not to long ago.
I told the guys at the Truck Shop to go over to the car section, and see if they could find what I had. Sure enough they found it, and it was for an Impala I think? My manual gearbox has a 360 degree tooth like yours. There is no difference in the size or ruggedness for the car rag joint, as compared to the one out of the book for the truck so it's no big deal. I just think the keyed version is more popular is all.

Re: Another ?? Steering coupler
ok so I think I have a 36 spline now that I counted it again.
Here is a picture of my Old one and the end of the gear box . See if you come up with 36 also. I was told to only count half and time by two. Two of the same pictures sorry |
