A 379...What does this mean on the side of my motor???

I am taking a small block of some sort out of 1980 3 ton chevy truck. It has A379 on the side of the block. What does this mean? Cant get to the numbers on the back. I have it turned on its side now pulling the motor.

My pops is haulin it off to the scrap yard. He had bought like 7 from a company going out of business. We have never heard it run. No keys. Its got brand new oil in it. The block is black and so are the freeze plugs. It has a 1 barrel carburetor. What should I take off of it???

Why would a 3 ton truck have a 1 barrel intake and carb on it???

If the doors are solid, sell 'em.

Re: A 379...What does this mean on the side of my motor???

Ive got a ford just like it I gave $500 for. Runs and drives. I think the winch is a 20 ton pto Tulsa. It pulled that big truck on its side like it was nothing. I hate that its a ford, but pulls likea mule!

Anyone know what A379 means on my motor??

Doors are junk. Hood is good. Going to put flames on it and hang it in my shop.

I know to keep all the standard sq stuff. Just looking for stuff I might not know about. It has an inline air dryer for the air system I am removing and air tank.

Not sure if this is relevant or not, but wasn't the 379 the 6.2 Diesel?

I'm diggin' those ram horn manifolds too. They seem to have a bigger than normal diameter?

Does the engine appear to be externally balanced like a 400?

Once you have it pulled look behind the driver side head for the block casting number.

Re: A 379...What does this mean on the side of my motor???

Its only has one opening in the carb, and its round. I know where to look for castings numbers, but hard to get to while its in the truck. How do I tell if its a extrnally balanced 400?? Iys free, so shes coming out. thinkin bout puttin a 4 door dually together on the cheap. Like I need another project.

A-379 sound more like a casting date march of 79, you did say its a 1980 model.

External balanced 400 balancers are large and appear to have a notch ground out of them.

i have had a few motors out of those trucks. if it is the original motor it will have a steel crank, 4 bolt main , and decent rods. i would keep the whole engine if i were you.

The door panels say 81and up to me.
But it oughta be a a 4bolt and a steel crank.

By the way check the water pump by-pass like a big block..
