Hook up a tach to a 6.2
Don't feel like researching. It's one of those little Sunpro tachs I took from my Blazer because I converted to a tach-in cluster [that I made using the same kind of Sunpro tach]

Re: Hook up a tach to a 6.2
It's been a while since I researched it, but I think to hook up a tac on a diesel is pretty spendy. IIRC there are 2 ways to do it...mechanically off the vacuum pump or electrically off the alternator. I can't remember what exactly is involved trying to hook it up mechanically I just vaguely remember it has to do with the pump. Electrically, there is a gizwidget you can buy that attaches to the alternator.

I think you can just put a hall effect sensor or maybe even a magnetic pickup on the balancer they use them to read rpm on any thing that spins. Ive seen something of the sort adapted to old machining equiptment.

Re: Hook up a tach to a 6.2
I'm far from an expert but I have read quite a bit on it. You should search in the 6.2 section of dieselplace.com : http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=20
Here is one way: http://www.dakotadigital.com/index.c...128/prd128.htm Another: http://www.dakotadigital.com/index.c...rod/prd129.htm Autometer makes a medium size tach that has a strap that goes around the alternator to get a signal. They also make a 5" diesel tach that comes with the sensor that reads from the ballancer etc. Tinytach makes a digital tach but I don't think its round like a normal tach. |

Re: Hook up a tach to a 6.2
It's because of the lack of electrical output to make the engine run. I made a hybrid sender out of my vacuum pump and an HEI distributor like on dieselplace.com, but they're tricky and take a good day's worth of work to get it done.
