One of three things. Bad fuel gauge, wire going to sender or bed sender in the tank.

A way to check the gauge is to ground the wire to the sending unit to see if the fuel gauge moves towards empty. If it does then more than likely it's the sending unit in the tank that's bad.

Re: Speedometer problems n fuel gage help!!

Speedo - probably the cable (they are around $15 at NAPA). The cable just threads onto the back of the speedo and the side of the trans. If you unthread them from each end, you can turn the inner drive cable by hand and see if the other end turns. If not, the drive cable is sheared off. If it turns, then either the speedo drive on the trans is bad or the speedo itself is bad. Generally, it is just the cable.

On the fuel sender - if the gauge is stuck at 3 o'clock, then pull the wire off the sending unit and ground it out. If the gauge goes to 9 o'clock, then the sending unit is bad. You can also put an ohmmeter on the gauge stud to ground. If it is good, it should read between 0-90 ohms. If it is open (infinite resistance, then you need a new sending unit (about 30-50 dollars, depending on who you go through). Also, check to make sure the sending unit wire is connected. It runs from the sending unit to a terminal on the fuse block.
