94 1/2 ton 4WD transmission trouble.

I just bought a 1994 GMC 1/2 ton 4wd with 118,000 miles on it from my neighbor real cheap. It is rusty and he had a transmission line rust thru and leak out fluid. When he tried to move it he couldn't. So he found the cracked line and cut it and replaced the section with a hose. So after he fixed it it will not shift into 3rd or overdrive. Shifts into neutral with no power and engine revs when you give it gas. Drop it into first or second and it works fine. That's why I got it so cheap. Any ideas of what happened? Thanks

Sounds like he messed it up when it had no fluid in it. Will in slip when its in gear and you try to drive it in the gears that work? Sounds to me like its going to need a rebuild or find another tranny. Did u check fluid level and see what color it is and how it smells yet?

He never moved it with low fluid. Everything looks good, I have read that it might be one of the sensors on the tranny that went bad. Have not had time to even look at it yet.

(I know this is a hassle, but since it won't drive, you might as well....

Drop the pan, change fluid / filter... ( clogged filter?).... Maybe have a tranny /friend take a fast inspection... maybe fluid hasn't been changed in a while, and the fix may be "easy".... But,

SMELL FLUID.... sense if it is burned. If so...... rebuild time ( don't bother changing fluid).

But when rebuild done, you are good to go. ( flush coolers, etc)

4L60? 700R4? cant remember the year change....buddy of mine has a 92 c1500 and his did the same but without the cracked line......it would go into 1/2 but nothing in OD or rev. He had it quote on quote rebuilt and it did it again.. come to find out the planetary pump was shot big time, and the rebuild only lasted like 50 miles.lol

Fluid looks and smells fine. It just seems to me that it is something simple since all that happened is is leaked enough fluid that it would not move and all he did was repair the line and put new fluid in. Then it wouldn't shift after that.

The 3-4 clutches are fried. It was probably already leaking a little from the rusty cooler lines before the massive leak.

Low fliud level is the #1 & #2 cause of 3-4 clutch burn-up.

You think thats the only possibilty? The guy never drove the truck any distance at all. Just a few miles once in a while, he used it for getting firewood and drove another truck daily.
