Lift scare, lesson learned

I went if my shop this afternoon and saw my truck hanging off one side. I have been putting disc brakes on it and yesterday I had the wheels cut hard to the right. Somehow the truck was in neutral and it rolled back after I left till the left front dropped down on the control arm about the same time the rear tire hit the stop at the back. I can only guess how it wobbled when that happened. Thank god I wasn't there when it happened or I would have had a heart attack.
If it had fell over I would have never known what happened and everyone would have blamed the lift. It was my fault and have learned a valuable lesson.

Re: Lift scare, lesson learned

You need to chalk those wheels but, you already knew that . I'm glad you and the truck are ok. I also have a four post lift and I'm always concerned when the truck is on it& at the highest level. Here in cali we have quakes all the time so I don't like to leave the lift up at all over night if I don't have to. glad your good. cheers, Pat

I had one fall off a centerpost lift one time! Well as luck would have it, it was just up a little way to do brake work. Break time came along, & the damn thing fell off during the coffee break! It sure makes you think tho....crazyL

Re: Lift scare, lesson learned

I remembered last night why it was in neutral. When I started this project 2 months ago. ( bow season delayed me) the first thing I did was change the rear axels to the five lug ones. I put it in neutral to rotate the carrier to get to the shaft and c clips. I forgot to put it back in park and most of the time one end or the other was jacked up.

A friend had his brother in law killed when a car rolled off a lift and crushed him.

Yes, you were lucky. Fortunately, luck counts.

Seriously, I'm glad none of your property was damaged. Having to redo work you've already done sucks.

Re: Lift scare, lesson learned

I am fortunate and I said a prayer of thanks. I posted it here and another site so that maybe we will remember to think about things a little more. Sometimes we get in a routine and just do things. When I first got a lift I was very careful and very aware when I did things with the lift. With any thing that can hurt you it is usually the guy that has been using it for a while that has an accident. He gets careless.
At my concealed cary class the instructer said, "It's not a matter of if you will have a accidental discharge, it's a matter of when it will happen".
So, I will say if you have a lift and use it a lot, consider this. "It's not a matter of if you will have an accident with the lift, it's a matter of when".
If we remember these quotes, it may save someone's life. Our toys and hobbies would would seem so insignificant then.

Yikes! Could have been bad.
Some time back someone posted a pic of a customer's dually laying completely on it's side after having fallen off the lift. Too much weight for the lift and it broke.
