Heater

Hoping someone can help out with this my heater doesnt really heat up my cab very well not sure if maybe the blower motor is getting weak or what. If I have it on high on the floor vent and put my hand by the vent i can feel it coming out and hear the fan going but it doesnt come out of the vent very fast. Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated as it is starting to get cold around here.

Could be a mouse nest in the ductwork.

40years and alot of built up crap in the air phlenum equals no airflow// remove blower assy and heater core and you can clean out hand fulls of nasty stuff


when you have heater core out is a good time to flush it and pressure test it too

Is the cable from the bottom lever hooked up to the heater box door? Under the dash on the right side, there is a plastic plug in the firewall that the cable runs through. Take it out and see if the cable is hooked up to the door.

Not sure what it looks like in there yet I havent pulled anything apart yet. The heat is blowing and coming out just not all that great. I start it up in the morning let it run for about 10 minutes then start driving to work and it is still chilly in the cab by the time i get to work. You can feel the heat coming out on the floor just not coming out vey fast

I have three heater core boxes from various parts trucks , I took the best looking box an pulled out the core , not sure what got packed in the fins but there was no way air could flow thru there , I tried to wash it out blow it out with air an nothing really worked but since I had another I just cleaned that core out an bolted it back in sure glad I found that before I have put it into the truck !

Yep my 71 was the same way. I pulled the blower motor out and dug all the leaves and sticks and what not out. Then took the shop vac and sucked out as much as I could. The heater blows like a.....well it blows a lot better now. I was also not getting much heat out of it so I capped off the rad where the heater hose went and put both hoses on the engine. That got a lot more heat in the cab.

Its not likley to be a weak fan motor. They either work or they dont.

The easiest thing to do 1st is see if water flows flows freely through the core. Run some rad flush through the coolant system and then pull the hoses off the heater core and run fresh water throught each way til it runs clean.

When i did this my heater core leaked afterward. After searching I learned a lot of horror stories about aluminum heater cores. Wes at Classic Heart Beat has brass ones for $40. Way cheaper than any aluminum ones and a DIRECT FIT!!! and the heat is a night and day difference

Well i pulled the blower motor out and found the rats nest all around the heater core, and the blower motor they even had about a full roll of paper towels stuffed in with all the insulation. Heat works great now thanks for all the help guys.

My '68 sets most all winter and the '67 sets most all summer, I keep a cube of mouse poison under the seat of each one. Mice invariably get into the truck when I forget and leave the vents open, with the poison under the seat, they eat a bit and get super thirsty, they leave the truck in search of water and die before they get back into it. When I got my it '68 had a mouse nest in the heater box it made with seat stuffins. Still blows out little white fuzzies from the defrost from time to time. The '67 had a distinct odor of mouse in it when that came home, did not really notice it until winter plowing started and I turned on the heater. Then it was absolutely horrendous! I had to disassemble the heater twice to get rid of the smell. The second time I painted the inside of the heater box to get rid of it....mice are nasty in trucks.

When I got my 72 GMC back in HS, it had an aweful mice smell in it. I had to tear apart all of the A/C ductwork to clean it out.

I also had a jeep that a mouse built a little nest in the blower motor. It smelled aweful one day when the wife and I climbed in. Turn on the fan and heard a clunk clunk of a dead body. Needless to say, we drove a different vehicle that day. Luckily cleaning it out was easy.
