After reading the post on those mysterious glovebox door tags, I am contemplating building my 72' K30 dumptruck as military version. Olive Drab Green, brush guard, no chrome, BB, Dana-70 lifted, mud tires, tow hooks, winch, ect. Any photo's for reference? Should I put the big white star on the doors? Am i missing anything? Blazerman must have a suggestion or two. thanks

The only 67-72 I have that is military, is the '68 SS-396 El Camino that I drove at Bien Hoa, in VietNam. It was a chase vehicle for the U-2's. It was painted USAF Blue, with a white top, standard black SS trim, 350-horse 396, Turbo Hydramatic, no power steering or power brakes, but had a Kyzer big truck A/C unit mounted on the roof. It also had a 24V electrical system and aircraft radios to communicate with the U-2 pilots.

I do have a picture of it, but it is black and white.

The way I think the military would have done your truck, it wouldn't be a 30-series. It would have been a 10-ton unit.

We got a new P-20 Chevy step van, while I was at Bien Hoa, too. It had a 6-cyl, with a 4-speed (SM 465). Still, it beat the heck out of the '63 Econoline we had that would only turn right....and needed to turn left. We also turned in a '62 Dodge 6-passenger crew cab 3/4 ton pick up....that the First Shirt had us to paint before we turned it in! He didn't want it to look like we had used it. We didn't have the benefit of a paint booth, so you can guess how it turned out. I imagine some South Vietnamese organization ended up with it.

As I recall from the Marines, when I had to get checked out on Commercial Utility Vehicles at MCAS Cherry Point in 1974 -- It was in a gray '67 C/10 stepside with 250 L6 and 3 on the tree. Just the "stolen-from -the-Navy" Gray and 1" or 2" black lettering on the door:
U.S. MARINE CORPS [2"]
For Official Use Only [1"]
The big white star was a WWII thing for air recognition.
Another variant was MarCor dark forest green with yellow letters. There were also some code numbers and letters on the bumpers that only a motor pool guy would know meant. Also vehicles that were allowed on the flight line had white 2" reflective 3M tape striped vertically or diagonally on the bumpers just outboard of the mounting bolts. And a white license plate "U.S. Government Property" w/ numbers.
The corporal who checked me out *****ed at me for down shifting around a corner. He called me a "Damn hot rodder!." But I got my card. lol.

I think that would look tuff, I've seen alot of cool military stuff on ebay, blackout lights, D rings, brush guards, antenna mounts, alot of CUCV vehicles being parted out and the parts usually go cheap. I've talked to a few truck pullers and they told me a few ways of getting rid of that tracta joint in your dana 70 and getting your steeing back in the front where it should be. Olive drab paint with the white stars would look good but if your going dually you got to have some Alcoa wheels.

I forgot all about the blackout lights and antenna's. I would go with alcoa's, but dont think i could bring myself to painting over that nice shiny aluminum. I dont really mind the tie rod being behind the diff. as it is a little less vulnerable back there. I would also like to try one of the new electric lockers in the front. thanks boys

that truck is the one with the bed cut off from the back of the rear fenderwell back. lol. cut long bed into shortbed the easy way. bed ends at rear of rear fender

My dad bought a '69 short bed 2wd with a 250 6cly and sw465 trany from a local fire dept. It was originally a millitary truck that was sold to the forest sevice and the to the town for use as the fire truck. it was olive green on the inside and lime green over forest green over olive green on the out side. It had a metal plate on the dash with some(Idon't remember exactly) govt info on it such as serial #s and destination codes. very similar to the Jeep M715 I had for a while. It had a posi rear dana 44 and only 17000 miles when he bought it. Not sure about and outside markings and trim as the FD had changed it quite a bit.

A FRIEND OF MINE RESTORED A 68 1/2 TON SHORT STEP THAT CAME OFF THE AFB NEAR HERE IN FALLON NV. HE GOT IT FROM A GUY WHO WANTED THE SIX OUT OF IT, AS IT ONLY HAD 12,000 MILES ON IT. IT WAS WIRED FOR 12 VOLT, 6 CYL. 3 ON THE TREE. WITH ABSOLUTELY NO OPTIONS. IT HAD A BIG SIGN IN THE BACK THAT SAID "FOLLOW ME" & SUPPOSADLY NEVER LEFT THE AIRPORT.

I have heard from 2 different people, one on this board that had seen this truck at Eilson Air Force Base in Fairbanks AK, less the lift.
It is more believable than the oil company story the P.O. gave me.
Someday I will find out if any pictures are out there.
