Newbee with a couple of questions

I just got a 2WD '70 GMC Sierra Grande. It's in really good condition. It will be a long term project and daily driver. Here's my questions.

Is there some way to get more leg room with a different seat or removing the fuel tank behind the seat? The truck has saddle tanks, but I don't think they have a gauge.

I'd like to lower the front end just a little (maybe 2") then level the truck out. Does someone make a kit? I don't want to ruin the ride.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Newbee with a couple of questions

You won't get any extra leg room by removing the in-cab tank The seats hit the cab back wall before they do the tank. Many of us use the 88-94 Chevy/GMC C1500 bench seats, which are thinner and more comfortable, but I think the leg room is not any more or very minimal. It is the bad part of these older trucks.

Easiest/cheapest way to get a 2" drop would be to cut one coil from your front springs. Myself I am going to go with 2" drop spindles when I convert mine to front disk brakes.

Welcome to the board!!

Just adding to this. If you decide you need mid section room you can readjust the steering column and move it in and free some room up that way as well. Smaller stering wheel can help with this as well. Good luck.

Welcome from Sunny Florida! Be prepared to learn alot, very smart people here. Your 70 didn't come with disks so first decide if you're going to go that route (I highly recommend it). You'll need spindles so get the 2-1/2" drop ones (same $$ as new stock ones), you see where this is going....
Google "Classic Truck Parts" and order catalogs from as many companys as you can...they are free. Once you get started we will be here to help.
We also want to see pictures...lots of pictures!
Good Luck.

Re: Newbee with a couple of questions

post some pictures, I swapped to a smaller steering wheel and went with an 85 bench seat. I am going to remoive the tank to give my son some room for his speakers (spoiled kid) and then drop 2" and be done. This forum will be very helpful and great people will give you 100% correct info. They have done it all

Great advice. My '70 got the 2-1/2" disk brake spindles. For a daily driver, front disks are a must. Some vendors sell a kit that does not need to change ball-joints and tie-rod ends, but If you're going to replace any of that, buy the disk brake kit that uses the '72-up parts. Not necessary, but, if your're going to replace any of those parts, why not upgrade to the newer (and more stout) stuff.
.
I tried the dropped spindles with (1) cut coil, and found it to be too low for every day driving. Put stock length springs back in. Good luck and welcome to the board.
