top question
i finaly finished the drivetrain on my 73 jimmy im gonna start the body work now i decided on a rootbeer brown body with a black top. question is i cant decide how to finish the top linex or rhino line and paint i want it to last a long time so please give me your opinions or any other suggestions will be much apreciated thank you

You shouldn't need to do anything like that to the top, it's fiberglass.
I'd give it a glosscoat if anything!

The fiberglass top on my 82 Jimmy had paint over the fiberglass. The paint had sort of a 'sand finish' similar to anti-skid used on some fiberglass boat decks, but with much less sand.
When I repainted the vehicle several years ago, I removed the fiberglass top, placed it on some sawhorses and stripped all the old paint off. The bulk was removed using a 1/4 sheet electric sander. The final sanding was done with a 'long board'. Once prepped, I shot the whole truck with 2-part polyurethane enamel and followed directly with a clear coat. At first it seemed a little strange to have a smooth, shiny top rather than the sand finish. But now I really prefer it that way. |
