I have not had to do it but it seems like if you were to slide the transmission/transfer case rearward a little bit then you could install the clutch
fork. If you swap out the bell housing to engine bolts with longer ones then you can maintain the alignment of the the transmission to the engine. You might get by with leaving the cross member in to support the transmission transfer case as I don't think that you will have to move the assembly rearward very far to give you enough room to snap the clutch fork onto the ball.
