Today's 8 bolt versus yesteryear's 8 bolt.
Tried searching for this answer but could find it. Do the 8 bolt rims for today's Chevy 3/4 tons fit on the 67-72 Chevy 8 bolts? Thanks in advance!

The lug nut size is larger on the newer 8 luggers.

Sorry about the rookie question, just getting my 72 burb today. So inorder to put different rims on it I will have to find rims specifically made for this year of 8 bolt, correct? Any newer year 8 bolt will not fit?

The only thing I know to be different is the lug nuts on the newer 8 luggers are of a larger diameter, so they will fit the bolt pattern on the old axles but you will as far as I can tell would need to upgrade the lugs on each hub to the larger size.
Someone who has had direct experience with this will chime in sooner or later.

Newer year 8 lug wheels will fit. The lugnuts are what is different. I know a lot of members run the newer wheels on their C-20's... some have bought the correct lugnuts from E-bay. As stated above, someone will chime in with the lugnuts you will need to pick up. I think the size of the lugnuts are the same....I think the difference is in the way they seat (not 100% sure though)

I believe as mentioned the lug nuts are different. The reason you need the new style lug nuts is because the center caps are attached to the new style lug nuts. I'm not sure where you would find these new lug nuts but I would start with a tire shop and go from there if it was me.

I ran some on my 3/4 ton I sold. You can get lug nuts from lugnut king on ebay.

So is it just the lugut that needs to be changed or is it the actual bolt? Also how do you get rims to fit good on the back with such a big hub? Do you need to get some sort of a spacer to get the rim to fit out far enough to get a center cap on? Thanks again guys!

Just a Idea. I put 2008 Dodge wheels on my 1967 3/4 ton with no problems. The rear axel in my truck is from a 72 and the studs were bigger so I could use the lugs off the dodge. When i put the disk brakes on the from the rest will fit. I like the look of them.

I put a basic aftermarket set of wheels on mine. I went to the tire shop locally and ordered the "narrow shank?". They go one with the special lug tool. I had no issue with these. I had the basic open style acorns prior to that and they worked well too. You can run a spacer to bring out the rear if you'd like. I haven't yet but will in the future when I find the set one wheels I like. I also bought a basic center cap from the tire shop as well. I went with the large one on the front and back so it looked the same.[IMG]IMG_20110721_103629[/IMG]

I think I will be doing what Burb 71 did. Checked with a local shop today and the old guy working new exactly what would and would not work, he didn't have to look at the burb he just new. Think we will do a polished mod rim for the time being. Thanks for everything guys!

I just test fit some Hummer H2 wheels. The bolt pattern is 8 x 6.5 (same as the Dodge wheels above). The wheel studs were 9/16 and the aluminum wheels need a 60 degree conical seat.

The big reason for changing lug nuts on newer wheels are that the old trucks have SAE threads on them, newer trucks have metric lug nuts. If you want to use the original center cap that came with the newer wheel you can buy specialised lug nuts from different vendors as mentioned above.
I am actually going to use Ford F-350 Alcoa aluminum wheels on my 72 with Chevy center caps from a set of steel wheels. |

Sorry for the delayed reply, but I am new to this site. The lug nuts can be had from a number of sources, such as lugnut king. Have run these for several years, never ceases to amaze me that people still ask what kind of wheels they are!

Man, that is one sweet Burb! I had those same wheels on mine and it looked terrible. But they definitely look good on a lowered Burb.
