Is their anyway to tell if a truck started out as a long bed thru the vin#? ... Thanks

Yes, the spid label will have the wheelbase printed on it. Other wise no.

The vin will not tell you on a chevy, but the model number on the SPID in the glove box will tell you.

You can tell if the truck was 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, or 1 ton by the 3rd digit in the VIN (4th digit on a 72). 1= 1/2 ton, 2= 3/4 ton, 3= 1 ton. Obviously, if the truck was 3/4 or 1 ton it did not start out as a SWB. This is for Chevy trucks....GMC is a little different.
You could always crawl underneath the truck to see if the frame has been cut.
