Ways of removing the cab? How id you do it?

Was thinking of pulling my cab off the frame so I can clean up a previous sub-frame install and bring the cab in for the winter to do some patch work. If you could share some insight on whats the best/easiest way, it would be Greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I used a 4 x 4 with plywood blocks (placed under the door openings) and a cherrypicker. Lift it up, roll it back and roll the frame out from under. Can be a one person job.

the way i removed it was dangerous... but me and 3 guys put the new cab on (swapped from small window cab to large window cab) without any issues. I'd say give 3 buddies a case of beer. there are a ton of people here though that have bolted a 2x6 or 4x4 to a cherry picker and pulled the doors and lifted the cab up through the top of the door jamb

Seems simple enough, but would you have to lift it from the side?? I dont think a cherry picker is long enough to grab it from the front if its still on the frame. Right??

I lifted mine using the 2x4's thru the cab. I ran the arm of the engine hoist thru the door window and lifted from the side. I have to say that I was pretty nervous to do it alone, but it all worked out fine.

I made a little steel tube H that bolted in through the cab mounts.
I then can reach in with the cherrypicker from a open door.

to bolt it in, I just lift each side of the cab with a floor jack.

That strap deal is NOT the way to do it.
I used 2 2x6's the correct length to fit through the door sills. There is a short one on each end of that so the cab can't slip off. In the center are 2 2x6s tee'd to the top ones and they attach to the cherry picker, I think they are 20 or so inches long. Reason is if I wanted the extra height to lift the cab into a pickup, and it also better centers the cab's center of gravity.

When the factory lifted the cabs they did it using those door sills.

I have used a set of the old camper jacks to lift cabs. They work great but are getting hard to find.

After the tree grew up it was easy with one person!!!

I've got a couple of long time friends who lifted many an engine out and back in their cars with a chain hoist hooked to the limb of a big tree in the back yard of their parent's house. That old tree was probably involved in a hundred engine jobs over a ten year period. Their mom never knew who's car or who would be out under that tree and many times there were 6,8 or more of us out there. Good memories and she didn't raise hell with us if we had a few beers out there if we behaved ourselves.

The setup like Jmig1 showed in post 11 is what a lot of guys are using now. Inexpensive and easy to make and fairly safe for one guy to use by himself.

Could be what those 4 holes are for.

If you want to leave the doors on like I did, the board method didn't work for me....

I even tried leaving the doors closed, but that was even worse.

In late but here is how I did it. When I designed my garage I had the trusses in 3 places designed to support a 4K point load. The attic trusses are designed for 250 PSF floor loading. I have a very old4 pulley chain hoist that I use. Ceiling is high enough so cab can be lifted and chassis with engine can roll under it.

I used my engine hoist and some 4x4's like Jim in post #11. Worked out slick! Had to build an H bracket to bolt to the hoist, but thats half the fun! Thanks Guys for all the great ideas

Nice to see there are some "shade tree" mechanics around!
My old man used to tell be about pulling up under a tree to pull the engine out of his old truck. Since bearings/material had to be replaced frequently, he said he got pretty good at it. Actually left the block and tackle in the tree so others could use it, too. So, the tree was for two things...it was a crane boom arm AND shade!
