Transmission leaking at Speedometer cable

I had the transmission rebuilt years ago and it leaked immediately at the speedometer cable. I took it back multiple times, but got no satisfaction. They just said I wasn't driving it enough and that would make it leak.

Do you think I need a new speedometer cable or can you make a recommendation on something to seal it?

This might work depending if the threads a crossed or not. First remove spedo cable and clean male threads including removing the RTV with a can of carb clean. Do the same thing to the inside threads and pay attention to the collar where it spins on the cable clean it good if you re-install and hear grinding of dirt on the threads and can wiggle the cable behind the collar and see movement there re-do it. Had same problem on many cars and dirt was the problem every time tranny was pulled. There is no o-ring is in there for the collar.

Hope this helps you.

Re: Transmission leaking at Speedometer cable

it has nothing to do with the cable . u need to pull the insert and gear, then replace the seal thats in the inside, sometimes held in with a wire ring and the o ring on the outside . u might need a new gear . since they are plastic, they will wear a groove where the seal rides easily

Seems to me that a transmission shop should know this. I'd be leery about utilizing them in the future.

Very true--this should have been replaced during rebuild.

Re: Transmission leaking at Speedometer cable

Thanks guys. I fully agree -- I will not be using that transmission shop again and I will advise others against them also.
