Detroit Truetrac Differentials

TrueTrac

Does anyone have one of these? Can someone explain how they work? I am debating on whether I want this, a Detroit locker, or a posi.

It would be mainly for deep snow/ice. What would you all recommend?

You might want to send Rob at NoLimit an email and ask him. He suggested I run a Truetrac. He said it would handle 500hp in a mostly street driven truck and be quiet...unlike a Detroit locker, lockers make noise when you go around corners. I was scared and bought a locker anyway. Other guys on this board like the Trutrac too, I just can't remember who...other vendors on the board.

If you google Torsen differentials, it will confuse you... It is basically a Torsen differential. It is a "limited slip" type diff. In Torsen racing applications, the rate of slip can be manipulated by the "pitch" of the spiral planet gears. Lots of high end vehicles use these types. BMW, and the Hummer H1 are a few.

Personally, I like them. I want one for my front diff.

When playing around off road in a Hummer H1, and you experience wheel slip, you can feather the brakes and that causes the power to transfer to the wheel with the most traction.

Some vehicles do this automatically.

The Tru-Trac is a superior traction device. I think you'd like that better than a locker. Basically,the difference you'll see is a locker is both wheels all the time. Sometime that's just what you need but there are times it's a draw back...such as on a side slope. It will make the rear end want to come around when if only one wheel spun you'd stay straight(er). They both handle high power well. I have run several 4wds with Locker rear and Tru-Trac front. With the Tru-Trac in front it helps with the Locker coming around on side slopes because the front pulls better. For better winter road performance I'd go with a Tru-Trac,Gleason Torsen,or Auburn Gear. They are all limited slips and built to "take it".

I had one in my 86 K10. It was great, never had a probleom with it. My mistake with it was putting it in the stock 8.5" 10 bolt axles. I broke the ring and pinion, but the tru trac was fine.

I have about 500 miles on one in my K5. Haven't tested it on the trail yet. I noticed right away I can feel both back tires biting when I am going slow and turning sharp - like when parking in a gravel lot. Not sure if it should be doing that but I like the feeling of having both back tires pushing.

Had the work done at Randy's Ring and Pinion. It's what they recommended. I believe the concept is that the engagement is gradual like clutches but doesn't wear like friction surfaces would. A mechanical engagement but not slamming on/off like a G80 gov-loc.

I have one on my bench in a box, going into my impala SS (it came out of a 650hp Golen LT1 t56 powered caprice) they are really nice, expensive though.
