19 mpg

I filled up at a station on the freeway. Then drove 35 miles. I then filled up again. I used 1.83 gal. of gas. I figured I was getting 19 MPG. The truck has a 305 engine with an overdrive trans.

Re: 19 mpg

19 is really good. I got about 16mpg with my 87 GMC (305/700R4) Longbed 1/2 ton.

I would however suggest checking it over a couple tanks. You could have just had a tailwind on that 35 mile trip....

x2. One trip, one way, is not enough data to be exact. It could still be very close....

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

Re: 19 mpg

Yeah on a 35 mile trip you can't really get the exact mpg...I'd do a 100 mile trip just for giggles and figure it out that way.

Still *****in' mpgs for a brick rolling down the road. I'm stoked when I see 14 on the freeway and maybe 11 on the street hehe. But then again I have a sticker on my truck which reads "Fu*k Hybrids" hahaha.

If we sell our house I will drive it 900 miles to Texas. Then I will know what it gets. If it makes it to Texas that is.

ID be glad to see my 88 do more than 12. At least its constant, towing, flooring it, coasting it, always 12mpg.

Re: 19 mpg

GRS

Do you know what rear axle ratio you have?

My plans are a 700r4 behind the 250 I6, with 342 gears and see how tt turns out

As a side note: I've driven my dakota for too many miles. I've noted that the trans converter goes into lock-up mode at 55, any travel at less than that the fuel mileage goes down the Sh*ter. It seems to have a higher stall than necessary so I'm sure it's not helping.

Re: 19 mpg

The ratio should be marked on the build sheet in the glovebox

There are a lot of numbers in the glove box. I don't know what they all mean.

If I remember correctly my 82 and 87 did not, they just has the code for Standard Ratio.... mine were 3.07 or 3.08 whichever GM uses.
