Other than being screwed instead of riveted. Is the fact that there is a C and a K in the VIN odd? Thought they had one or the other to designate 2 or 4wd

Big, In 1972 the General added a C or T to the front of the Vin number. C is for Chevrolet and T is for GMC.

Ok, adding the C in front would make sense, other than this is a 2wd with rear trailing arms with the crossmember riveted to the frame.... If it was a 2wd conversion wouldn't it have leaf springs?

Don't get too excited yet. Check the frame numbers and see if they match. Two things could be happening here:
1) All Blazers were known as K5's - regardless of 2wd or 4wd. Did this follow with the K or C in the VIN? I don't know, but someone else on here probably does.
2) If it is supposed to be CC for 2wd even though it's a Blazer, it is possible the factory screwed it up. Maybe it was the end of a Friday and the person stamping the VIN plate got it wrong. Check the numbers on the frame and see if they match.

If the frame numbers don't match the VIN plate numbers, you have a reason to get excited.

Might want to check the local laws. Here, if the vin has been tampered with in any way (even if original and just replaced rivets with screws), it can be seized by the police and operator charged with a misdemeanor.

The screws would scare me right out of the deal. If the VIN tag and the frame stamp match then it might be that when the body was painted the tag was removed without thought on how it would be reattached (happen more than one would think). Some people will do things like pull a VIN tag to paint (the body might be off another Blazer) and then just screw it back one thinking that is OK. If it is a 1972 Blazer then the C first digit would be for Chevy, and like 71swb4X4 said the Blazer's could all be K for the second letter even though it is a 2wd.

I would go over it with a fine tooth comb if my heart was set on it, then get the correct rivets to attach that tag before I tried to take it to the local DMV.

BTW original style rivets can be bought, they are found in Hemmings.

I've seen the CK on there before. Don't let that scare you.

I had to rivet my vin tag back on when I replaced my cab. I had an all original, decently optioned truck but it was rusty. I got a super nice, all original metal cab and put it on, and riveted my original Vin tag to it. So my frame vin and gvwr tag match. I even have the original glow box door with the correct vin.

Just look at it closer, there might be a good reason someone had to do that.
