should I go to 4 wheel disk or disk drum?
I'm doing a restore on a 68 chevy and have changed the front crossmember with one from a 85 chevy with all new rotors and calipers ball joints and tie rods.
The truck will not be a daily driver so is it worth going to all disk. Would love to hear from others who have changed to all disk and if they are happy with the set up |

Re: should I go to 4 wheel disk or disk drum?
well if you like spending money sure. The rule is that you change the disc brakes every 2 or 3 times before you do the rear.Remember 70% of braking is done in the front only 30 % is done from the rear.I had boat trailer with disc brakes all the way around have a lot more problems from sitting then I've seen from drums. And if you are a tinker and likes working on stuff leave the drums.Plus if you have younger boys in your family that like to work on old car's and trucks. It would be a wonderful teaching tool.

Re: should I go to 4 wheel disk or disk drum?
If you're going to run stock wheels there's not a cosmetic reason to do it. Resale wouldn't be any any different Stooping power not appreciably different. But I hate working on drum brakes, especially self-adjusting with all those spring, so I'd probably do it if I were planning on keeping it.

Disc all around the way to go...It is a bit pricey but the looks of it and the performance makes up for it.

Re: should I go to 4 wheel disk or disk drum?
Thanks for the replys so far.
I'm mostly interested in the stopping power over drum. They won't be seen since I'm running baby moons with very large micky thompsons. Yes they will cost more but for what I have invested in the truck it's cheap upgrade if they stop better. I'm running about 450/500 hp and would like to stop LOL Looking to order my chrome brake booster soon and that will depend on what brake set up I go with |

Re: should I go to 4 wheel disk or disk drum?
not sure about the 1/2ton stuff, But on my Blazer with a 14bolt it was cheaper to upgrade to disc than it was to replace both drums and shoes.

Re: should I go to 4 wheel disk or disk drum?
Since you have a lot of $$$ invested already, go for rear disks.

Re: should I go to 4 wheel disk or disk drum?
It's a pick-up truck, there's no weight back there, the drum brakes have more stopping power than you'll ever need
(they do less than 30% of the stopping) so rear disc's are overkill.............but if you've got wheels with lot's of open real estate they sure do look cool |

Re: should I go to 4 wheel disk or disk drum?
Only real benefit for a street driven truck with rear disks is looks, if you cant see them anyway's spend your money elsewhere, you wont notice a difference in braking power.
The drums will lock up the rear tires and slide just the same as disks (since there's no weight in the back)

Re: should I go to 4 wheel disk or disk drum?
If it wer me I would stick with the drums, you won't see them and you won't notice any improved stopping power unless you plan to autocross your truck were you will be heating the brakes causing them to fade. Plus technically drum brake have more stopping potential than discs because they have more contact area. Thats why semi's use drums.

Re: should I go to 4 wheel disk or disk drum?
if you do the drums up with quality parts, you won't have to mess with them for 100,000 miles or untill the cylinders start leaking.

Re: should I go to 4 wheel disk or disk drum?
I just did my 68 with a kit off of ebay- I think $349 for everything but axle seals and a rear diff gasket. While the truck stopped well after I swapped to front disc, the rear disc now stop on a dime. For the price I paid, I would rather stop than mess with the drums. Comparing the two is like comparing points to hei, they both work but hei works better.
