The reason I hate rust convertors
This bolt was treated with Ospho and was holding the bed of my truck for several years. Not left outside in bad rain or weather. Just developed this crappy crust on it and rusted WORSE than bolts not treated with it. Just my 2 cents.
P.S and yes I believe that I followed the directions on the package how to do it

Re: The reason I hate rust convertors
that is why i've always felt that with common cheap readily availabe hardware like that. that it is a better use of time money and effort to just go to the hardeware store and buy new superior grade replacement stuff// of course it does require that a person b able to count the number of pieces needed and measure with a ruler the required replacements

Re: The reason I hate rust convertors
The first thing to understand Ospho is used to create a bond between metal and primer so that you can paint over rust. That means that is has a base that causes the metal to become somewhat open to whatever it sees. It etches the metal to allow for adhesion, that is why that bolt rusted.

Re: The reason I hate rust convertors
That's a new one for me. What the heck is that?
After using that stuff you need to paint. As mentioned, you etched the surface which uncoated promotes rust. I love rust convertors. They are my savior. But,you have to use the right one for the job. I hate that stuff that creates a white oxidation. By the time you get that off you strip the product off. It just changes the color of corrosion from how I see it. I love the Permatex rust treatment. It kills the rust as well as acts like a seal to protect unpainted metal for a long time. I'm lazy and use it to treat surface rust on stuff that sits around waiting for restoration. It buys me time. I just hit it a couple times a year. You can paint right over it,too. You can also put it right over paint to act as a shellac. I have old tin signs with thin paint (patina) that I coat with it to preserve them.

Re: The reason I hate rust convertors
Hmm I could have sworn that on the label it said that you don't have to coat over it. Been known to be wrong before tho!

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=QFT OK now back to the thread I have used ospho type products with good results. I think it's just a phosphoric acid. But you need to coat it afterwards. |

Re: The reason I hate rust convertors
Well I will be damned, you are right. Would have been helpful if I had read instructions back in the old days! Anyone a member of the SPI forum by the way? (Southern Polyurethane). They hate rust convertors for some reason and say to never EVER use them. But I am glad to hear that they have worked for people on here because I will be forced to use some on a couple things on the truck that I cannot otherwise get rust free
