Has anyone here mounted their engine and tranny before the cab is mounted? I just wondered if there were any reference points on the s10 frame that could help with location, also the tranny cross-member. It would just be easier without the cab on.

This isn't what you want to hear, but I wouldn't chance it, especially since no one but you is sure of the relationship of your cab to your S10 frame. I kept my '55 frame, and I positioned my small block as far back as I could while still being able to get the valve covers off easily. The cab position was the most critical factor for me. Also check distributor clearance, and be sure you can get it out without pulling the engine!

Maybe someone else has a measurement for you, but putting the cab on is a lot easier than redoing the mounts down the road (especially after the frame is painted).

You are so right, I know that the easiest way is definitely not always the best way. I certainly don't mind setting the cab and doing it first so as to prevent those potential problems you mentioned. It just seems that most everybody here is fairly consistent with their measurements like missing the firewall by 1 to 2 inches and so forth. Just thought that there might be a point of reference on the frame that someone had noticed. Thanks for all the valuable info here .... All yall are great

Speaking from experience, mount the cab first. I positioned my cab and front fenders (with tack welds on the mounts) where I needed them on the chassis. After mocking up the motor position I blew everything apart and welded up the motor mounts. The process was time consuming but gave me the results I wanted.
