Asap! Why won't my truck shift out of 2nd!??

I was driving for about an hour at 90 kmh and all of a sudden after going up a hill, my truck wouldn't shift back up. I checked the tranny fluid which was low & stopped, put in 2L of fluid which made no difference, but it says the level is good on the dipstick. Wtf is happening? I've put maybe 5k km on the rebuilt 700r4. I'm stuck an hour from home now unsure if it's safe to drive home at 50km/h. It won't shift out 2nd at all & the 1-2 shift is hard. I had this problem before the trans got rebuilt

Sounds like something is sticking inside your transmission. Don't know what else to tell you...

Do 700R4s use vacuum to determine upshifts like TH350s do? If so, it could be a simple problem with the vacuum line coming off.

while the truck is running pull the throttle valve cable in and out and see if it may be stuck take a look here http://www.transmissioncenter.net/700r4.htm

Re: Asap! Why won't my truck shift out of 2nd!??

Throttle valve is probably stuck. Stomp the gas pedal to the floor three or four times and see it will free it up.
I have trhown them in park for just a second going 15-20 mph, the vibration of the parking pawl will some times free the valve, and it will not go into park going that fast.
What did the fluid look and smell like?

Iv'e done it many times and never hurt anything, not saying that it can't. If he's stuck and wants to get home give it a try. But normally unless the converter is coming apart and pumping metal in it the stomp method will work.

or you could just go under the hood, disconnect the TV cable end off the throttle cable, and then pull it all the way out then let it snap back. That is the way Trans-go told me to check for a stuck TV valve.

Re: Asap! Why won't my truck shift out of 2nd!??

Try disconnecting the TV cable and driving and see how it shifts (if at all). Don't drive it far, just enough to see if it'll shift. Then reconnect. Not that you want to, put you could always drop the pan and see if there's a more than normal amount of metal shavings in there. Would also give you a chance to maybe look at the valve.

Don't want to add insult to injury, but my 700r4 did the same thing about a year ago...it was in the shop the next day getting rebuilt. If a shop rebuilt it, definately give them a call. Even though mines out of warranty, he told me to always call him if something wasn't right and he'd make it right.

Agreed haha, just not an option at this time.. Hopefully in the future . I ended up grabbing a hotel & taking the truck to a shop where I was, who checked a few things & said to take it back to the guy who last worked on the tranny. Thank god for CAA & free tows, I ended up at home the next day & will be calling the guy who worked on the tranny tomorrow morning.. Appreciate all the quick help!

junk when stock yes, very nice when built right not that silly corvette servo and shift kit crap that supposedly handles 450hp like most shops (90%) advertise, they are still stock and even 300hp can kill them when you flog em

Its got a corvette servo & a shift kit.. they were both in it when i got it. If so many people advertise it & do it, then why is it junk? I'm not disagreeing, just asking because you probably know more than I! They are still 'stock' with these modifications?

corvette servo will only add 15% more holding power than stock and the shift kit decrease overlap of gear changing (one gear is still slightly applied while shifting into other gear((overlap)) which causes wear) so that gives it longer life, when you change to a beast sun shell increase the pump pressure and vane count along with a sonnax 30% over stock or fairbanks 50% over stock servo's with a kevlar band or wider alto bands this site has alot of info

http://www.transmissioncenter.net/700MegaRaptor.htm

the problem is that trans shops rebuild a trans and put a shift kit $75 and a corvette servo $ 25 and sell it for upwards of $1500 dollars when its really no better than a stock trans that you can do all this to yourself

Re: Asap! Why won't my truck shift out of 2nd!??

Had a problem similar to this with a 90's van. Builder recommended I hold it in first manually to about 3500 revs and as revs were climbing, slip my foot off of the accelerator and manually shift at the same time. Cleared mine right up.

Re: Asap! Why won't my truck shift out of 2nd!??

Well if any of you recall this thread, I FINALLY today got a call to say my trucks ready.. The guy told me that the 3-4 valve was burnt & stuck so he replaced it & put a new belt in. So I'm going to pick it up in an hour or so. I am just a bit concerned that it may recur.. This was the 2nd time that the same problem happened & I don't think theres anything we can do to prevent it from happening again..

Anyhow, I'm excited! I missed my baby & tomorrow my old man & I are finishing framing & starting the roof on our new garage so I'll be able to fix er up indoors over the winter

if anythings burning up inside it means things are getting to hot, rynning an aux cooler on top of the built in rad cooler will help keep things in check
