Another thread on my 62 GMC indicates my curb weight is 3390 lbs, figure in the (probably) 100 lb lighter (302) motor making around 340 hp and about 350 lb/ft torque I think I should be good to go! I LOVED my 283/ bored to 291 cid engine in my 66. With a three on the tree and 4.10 gears it was A LOT of fun to twist up. Just make sure youve got a trans that is easily shiftable a bolt in the harmonic dampner and the right rear gears and it should be a real fun piece.

I'd mill those Vortec heads if you're gonna use them on a 305. The chambers should be larger than the 305's and will lower an already low compression ratio.
And the 283 crank is not gonna fit without journal spacers and you'll have to change your rods also. 283's are small journal and 305's are large. A 307 crank would work. It's basically a lrg jrnl 283 crank

As with the gears as Ray said it would be fun, but short lived, you still have a weight issue, you`ll need the low end torque to get it rolling, this data base where ever I picked it up is wrong, I`ve had my short bed fleet on the scales ( hauling materials ) and empty it weighed in at 3840 lbs without my butt in it, with a small block vortec 350/350/373 gears. At 65 I`m tach 2980 rpm with 28 inch tires. If you have a truck scale around in your area, most of the time they will allow you to weigh it if you ask...
