Matching numbers???

I'm looking at a 72 Super and wanting to know how I can tell if the 350 in it is original? What else should I be looking for as well? This is not the original owner and he don't know whether its original or not. When I get home I will post pics on either Sunday or Monday. If decide not to move forward maybe someone on here might.

Thanks, Jeff

Re: Matching numbers???

Hey Jeff....first off to the boards from over here in Cornelius!!!

Get a picture of the SPID too (inside the glovebox door), for the 350, try to pull the codes off the back driver side of the engine and off the passenger side head at the front...does it have woodgrain glovebox, dash bezel....post pictures when you get a chance ...the Super gurus will definitely be able to help you with thorough answers

Thumbs up Re: Matching numbers???

Got a pic of the SPID as well as several others. It does have woodgrain dash bezel but the woodgrain glove box has been painted over. Has all the Super badging. Has a good bit of rust that may be more than I'm able to handle at the moment. He's asking $4K but I think he will deal. Just had a baby and needs the cash. BTW, has your wife had hers yet? I think I guessed 11/22/11 @ 11:22:11 pm. Curious as to who won if anyone yet.

I was able to get the number on the head at the passenger side but not at the drivers rear of block. Should these two numbers match? And should that match something on the truck as well?

BTW, Love the site

Re: Matching numbers???

No they won't match. The number on the rear (upper left side of the rear of the block) will be the casting number. Lots of sites have info on blocks, heads, intakes. One such site is nasty z28
Here's a link:http://www.nastyz28.com/sbchevy/sblock.php
The number stamped on the pad on the right front will tell you when and where the engine was assembled. There is info on how to decode that also at that site. The actual casting date of the block itself is behind the flywheel, so unless disassembled you won't see that one. Should normally be within a couple of weeks (before) the build date of the truck (if you know it from a build sheet). Your 350 will probably have a casting number of 3970010, but that casting number was used for a lot of years and applications.

Re: Matching numbers???

Yep, Shortbed. Got a vin starting with CCE. What's the first C stand for. And the numbers on the front right of the engine is K01 07 TDJ. Looks to be a Canada engine? Rare? But the plant assembly appears to be Baltimore. Not matching? I still dont have the number at the back of the block. Should that match the front number?

Re: Matching numbers???

The 1st C is a 72 only VIN...it means Chevrolet, the 2nd C stands for Conventional (if it was a K then it would be a 4x4), the E=V8....I use LMC catalog to help me

no...as rsavage stated above...the driver side one will not match the passenger side one...get a mirror or some paper and chalk...lay the paper over those number and rub the chalk on it....you may need to get a rag and wipe it off first... probably gonna be real oily and dirty too

Looks like the engine is a 350/ 175hp or someone could of put in a 350 from a van/ bus from 1980

TDJ 1972 350 conv.cab,a/t 175 4 C-10 & 20
TDJ 1980 350 van & bus,a/t L LS9 155 4 C-10 to 2500
