It's pretty much common knowlege that later model power steering components will fit on these trucks if they are all changed as a set (77 & up used o rings on the hoses and a smaller input shaft on the gearbox, which requires a newer style rag joint)

However, I was unaware until today that the power steering pumps & gearboxes for 73-76 1/2 ton 2wd are identical to the older ones.

I just thought that I'd mention it for all of us who have to go looking for junkyard "treasures" occasionally

Are they 100% the same? With the mounting locations being the same, there may be a port aimed in the wrong direction. (Like directly into a bracket)

The gearbox is exactly the same.

I've seen the problem you're refering to with the pump, but when I checked with autozone they show the same pump part nunber all the way up to '76 (they changed over to a different pump with o ring fittings in '77). I just put one of those pumps on my truck and can see how if the belt was long enough that you had to clock it all the way to the outside for tensioning, that you would probably have clearance problems.

Also, just an FYI, if anybody is retrofitting a new system, I'd go with the newer style. The gearbox is the same price as the older one, but the pump is 60.00 bucks less

The pump is the same, however the housing / fluid resivour is different.

Ahhh, that is why I was thinking the parts guy was wrong.
Thanks for clearing that up Wes. I normally picture the entire deal when some one says "power steering pump".

Take a look at those 2 pumps......the 1 for 67-72 has a nut holding the pulley on (also keyed shaft). The 73 up pump on my longhorn has the pulley pressed on....something is different on the shaft, from what I have seen. I need to swap the pump on my longhorn(got a leaker).....i think all I have left is the old style pumps, & Im not sure they will mix & get the proper depth on the pulley? has anybody tryed that? crazyL

mannn...I just tossed one that probably woulda worked Al.
I'll try to see if I have any more laying around.
I think I still have one, but if it is the one I am thinking of, it is a metric one.

Yea, I just tossed some stuff too......probably the one I needed:p I hate it when I do that! I think I still have some olds pumps, there might be something to fit with a pulley swap
