Hey all. For those who do not know me, I am visiting from the 67 - 72 pages with a question on your trucks.

I was watching the original Cannonball run today (for the millionth time) and was looking at the dually driven in the race. It was white and gold, had teh Trans-Am's screaming chicken on teh hood, and said something about INDY on it. I was going frame by frame (I have it on DVD) and was zooming in on it, but could not make out exactly what it was saying on the door.
Was this a real truck? (A dually??)
Any one have pictures?
How about production numbers?

The movie was released in 81 if that helps any of y'all.

Thanks in advance, hope some one has some info.

Yep. I watched that just the other day myself. It is a 1980 GMC Indy Hauler. I've never seen one that is a crew cab dually except in that movie, but I have a short wide bed. Look at this part of my page. Especially look at the 1980 Ad.

Joe,
You being the expert on these, but from what I know, there were duallys and wreckers that were built that has the same marking on the that were actually used at the Indy. I have seen pics of them, but I don't think they were offered for sale to the public from what I have understood. They still do this today.

That was awsome! Thanks for the info. I have never noticed any INDY trucks except for the blue dodge. *yuk*
I have to say, that daully in the movie looked awsome in the movie.

Here's an ad from 1981 that shows just what you are talking about with the wreckers, but not the dually. I have no doubt they built them though.

I think that's what Chris was trying to say. They were built in limited numbers for the pace crews, NOT for production...

Yeah, I meant they built the crew cabs, like in Cannonball Run. I was agreeing with Chris about the wreckers.

They are cool no matter what. I have seen one of those wreckers for sale before, it matched the 80 paint scheme like mine. It was cool. There was a flatbed for sale on traderonline.com, but without pics I don't know what it really was.

Oddly, there are a few guys who advertise all kinds of GMC trucks on Traderonline as Indy Haulers (search for GMC Indy under classic cars). Based on the poster above, they aren't.

I never knew that there was such a thing until about 8 or 9 years ago. I work at a local Chevy dealer and a guy brought one in for us to repaint. Wasn't a frame off,just a complete paint job. I remember the decal kit being REALLY expensive.

Milner - Kind of an interesting note, my 1980 Indy Hauler came from Iten GMC Pontiac there in Bismarck, even though I bought it in California. Who knows, you've probably seen it before!

ElGracho,what a small world. I bet I have seen yours before. I wonder if there is anyway to tell if it is the one that was in our shop. It would have been done about 8 or 9 years ago. I remember them subbing out the install of the screamin eagle decal to a local stripe installer because of the price,nobody wanted to take a chance and ruin it.

Hey, somebody mentioned wreckers.

A few years ago I was coming back up from a trip to TX, and pulled into a truck stop for fuel. I noticed the guy at the far pump
had a VERY INTERESTING truck.
It was an early 90's GMC C-3500 with a nice Holmes tow body on it. Black with silver and red trim, with lots of SS and chrome.
I got closer, and on the door was a signature (decal)

DALE EARNHARDT!!!

The guy said his boss had 5 of them in his fleet of wreckers!!
Suposedly, they were available at the GMC heavy truck dealer.
This looked alot like the "signature series" Lumina that was produced later on with about the same decal package.

Anyone else seen one of these trucks?
