steering box question

I've got to do something with my seering box it leaks like a sieve. so I'm needing to pull it and put seals in it. this is the only thing I've never tore into before and I'm having problems finding any info on them
so is their anything special I should watch for when pulling the box apart? I dont think I'll pull the top plate off with the gear adjustment so the only seals will be the ones in the ends

anyone got a link to an exploted view of a box that would realy help

Re: steering box question

My 1977 C30 was leaking like a sieve out the sector shaft and input, and I've replaced seals in the past but at some point I figured a 34 year old box might need to be replaced. Price was pretty good at rock auto so I just bit the bullet and replaced it. Having a tight steering box did illustrate the other deficiencies in my balljoints and tie rods though.

It never ends.

Re: steering box question

I have done the same thing you have talked about. It did not last long before they leaked again ( 10 to 12 months). I guess they get to a point the bearing surfaces get enough wear that they move around so much they just wear the seals out again. I just put another on from the local parts store. Problem solved.

I am surprised it was that much. I bought one for my 82 and it was only 125.00. It was a rebuilt one from cardone.Must be some diffrences in the years.

Re: steering box question

I've got the link Bad Karma posted bookmarked.
Careful on a re-seal. I resealed mine and ended up replacing the box anyway. As it turned out, in my case, those little ball bearings were wore. When rolled on a flat surface they appeared to be little footballs. Couldn't get the box adjusted so it was smooth after I put it back together. Oh well, if it worked I could have saved 100.00, instead I ended up replacing an almost 40yr old steering box. At least now I know first hand what the guts of a steering box look like.

I'm kinda like duct tape- no real purpose, but handy to have around.
