Where to buy a starter for my 1949 Chevy Pickup

Folks, any suggestions on where I should buy a new starter? Went to start her this AM and had to hit the starter with a board while my wife stepped on the switch.

Sounds like it could be the motor brushes. How about just taking it to a local automotive electrical shop and have it rebuilt?

It most likely can be repaired with new brushes and bushings. There are usually starter/alternator shops in most every city of any size in the country. The local to me guys can fix just about anything that can be repaired and the owner is an old car guy with several vintage rigs of his own.

You could hop over to www.stovebolt.com and see what they have to say. That forum is more about restoring trucks than hot rodding them so those guys work on the older engine stuff.

i saved a ton having a boat starter rewound.. found a rewinding place in the yellow pagers.. 75 bucks instead of over 400... if the windings are good you can buy a rebuild kit..

Re: Where to buy a starter for my 1949 Chevy Pickup

Just had mine rebuilt, an auto machine shop here in Montgomery has a guy from TN come by to pick up starters, generators, etc. and rebuilds them. It cost me $137.50 but was well worth it. My truck has never turned over so smooth and quick in the 22 years I've owned it! (1959 Chevy Longbed Fleetside).

How did you come out on that Pvinneau? Did you get the starter repaired?
