front clip/crossmember info please

Please help me understand what I will need to change on my 64 suburban to use the current setup off a friends 69.

Mine is all stock and he has already done the disc brakes, drop spindles, a-arms flattened with air bag cups and all. I want to put air bags on mine and notch the back. He is totally redoing his truck and going 5 lug. I want to keep 6 lug and his current setup seems like it will fit my needs perfectly.

The question is how or what all do I need to swap onto mine? He is going to cut the frame near the firewall since he is redoing all of his but can I just change out the crossmember and be good? This is my first run at doing this and looking for a little insight from the pros!

thanks in advance!

That '69 suspension, crossmember and all is the same as what's under your '64 Suburban.

Re: front clip/crossmember info please

so that means I can take it all of that cross member or use his I guess. He's just done all the work for the lowering process. I figured it would cost me at least what he'd sell it to me for to do the same thing. (A arms, drop spindles, disc setup etc)

I was worried about my oil pan hitting but he said he has no problems with it. Thanks for the info captain, I will be hitting you up for my rear disc setup someday (soon hopefully). just got to figure out which route I want to go.

Re: front clip/crossmember info please

I guess my confusion is how he is able to run the factory crossmember and still lower the frame to the ground. Looking at the porterbuilt and other dropmembers seems like they are necessary?

I'm on a tiiiiiiight budget (another kid on the way) so as bad as I want it I can't spend that kind of money. just want to make sure this crossmember will work for me

As far as I know, all you have to do is transfer the components( upper and lower A-arms,spindels, etc) If his is a power steering truck, you'll need his tie rods/steering parts, as well.
The crossmembers are about all the same. we've used '73-'87 control arms and spindles in the past on the OEM crossmembers.

Thanks for the info. Mine is already power steering and his is too so that shouldn't be a problem. I just haven't seen many trucks on here with airbags that use the stock crossmember. I thought it would create a problem when lowering it. I know he has his on the ground so it works somehow.

Is it possible to get a truck all the way to the ground with just the components leaving the crossmember stock?

Re: front clip/crossmember info please

ok after looking at a current picture of his suburban he definitely has frame work. I didn't think it was as easy as it sounded.

He's chopping his frame at the firewall, can I just take his and weld it up in the same place by cutting mine at the firewall (or wherever we decides best) It looks like his frame has been changed quite a bit from this picture?
