Engine block number question/Help

I need a lil help please. I got the engine block number and looked it up. It comes back to two different size engines. A 327 and a 350. So other than pulling a head off and measuring how can I tell what engine I actually have? Block #3970010.

I have both a 2-bolt main and 4-bolt main 350 with that block number.

Re: Engine block number question/Help

You need the suffix code off the front also, and a date code off the rear may help also.

Re: Engine block number question/Help

The only way to tell what you have (as born) is to get all three numbers, the casting number, date code, and stamping numbers from front pad. With that you can tell make, model, HP rating, trans type, and maybe other stuff like carb, emission equip, etc.

Re: Engine block number question/Help

Yep, it's a 350. Here is a link
http://www.nastyz28.com/chevy-engine-code-stampings.php
If you have the numbers off of the front passanger side of the block you can decode it some more, along with the head casting numbers, intake, etc.
It's all on nastyZ28's site.

Re: Engine block number question/Help

look at the locations in the pic. IIRC the 327 and the 350 are the same bore size the only diffrence is stroke (crankshaft) so pulling head would not tell you anything more. Both great engines by the way
