New here: Pics and Hubcaps on 8-lugs?

I bought a 1965 C20 2WD longbed stepside to start going through. Phase I is to redo the chassis, Phase II is to redo the engine bay (keeping the stock 292 b/c it runs great but doing new intake, carbs, and exhaust), then Phase III is to redo the interior. At this point, I don't plan on 'fixing' any of the body's patina - just make it a great driving truck.

I've been researching a lot here (very helpful), but I can't seem to figure out if I can put hubcaps on these 8-lug wheels because there doesn't seem to be any metal tabs for which to mount the hubcaps. Are there hubcaps available for these 16" wheels?

Here's other pics of the truck in its virgin state:

Re: New here: Pics and Hubcaps on 8-lugs?

Welcome to the forum and great lookiing truck. The four bumps on the front surface of the rim around the hub hold on the hubcaps. Those are 71-up chevy rims made for disc brakes, which work fine for either disc or drum. Actually more desireable to me because they can be used on either brake system. You can use the dogdish hubcaps on those rims and trim rings. The earlier rims only had 3 bumps and were made for drum brakes, and even earlier than that would have had wheel clips just outsid the hubs to hold the caps. Hope this helps

I've been wanting to do dog dish / baby moons with trim rings on mine. Are there a special size dog dish / baby moon for the 8 lug verses the 6 lug? Or do they work for both? Mine are 16" - Not 16.5".

Re: New here: Pics and Hubcaps on 8-lugs?

I believe that the only difference was 4x4 as opposed to 2wd. The hubs stick out much further on the 4x4. The hubcap on your spare is the dogdish style cap correct for 64-66. Try it on your rims and see if you have the clearance on the rears. Shoudln't be a problem on the front. The caps can be found fairly easy and are also available repop'd. The trim rings are carried by most catalogs co's and come in 2 different sizes typically. A short or wide ring based on preference.

Re: New here: Pics and Hubcaps on 8-lugs?

BTW- If you ever decide to do disk brakes on the front, those rims will clear the calipers. That makes them pretty desireable esp. if you want to run stock hubcaps & trim rings.

Re: New here: Pics and Hubcaps on 8-lugs?

Your original hubcap on the original spare wheel is the clip type, which wont work on the later wheels you have on the truck. You are going to have to find a set of 3/4 ton chevy hubcaps that were non clip style, whih I believe didnt start till 1969 and up. The half ton hubcaps and wheels for 64-66 caps where non clip style. The 3/4 checy caps from the late 70-early eighties are cheap and easy to get, and will fit you wheels. Try taking the hubcap off of your spare wheel and you will see what I mean.

Those look like wide base 16.5" clip wheels which were popular on camper pickups in the 60's and 70's.They will accept the period 3/4 ton hubcaps. The clip 16.5" are much harder to find than the bump 16.5".

Re: New here: Pics and Hubcaps on 8-lugs?

I haven't measured yet, but I thought they would probably be 16". Guess I really have to measure now, b/c I'm on the hunt for a vintage, beaten set to go with the truck.

Re: New here: Pics and Hubcaps on 8-lugs?

I have an idea that i havent had time to explore yet. I have a set of 90's 3/4 ton 8 lug wheels. My 66 clip type caps seem to fit down in the center part. I dont know how to attach or if they will clear the rear axle, as it sticks out a little. I will try to get some pics. We need to keep this thread going for us hubcap guys. If anyone has some info with measurents on the different cap sizes and wheels with bumps measurents, we need to post this up. Im thinking they made more than 3 sizes of caps and like 2 mounting setups. I am just getting started in this and dont have much to offer yet. The 4x4 had caps too i think. Did they use the 66 cap back to 64?

6 stud 15" wheels without clips the hubcap has an inner diameter of 10 3/16"
6 stud 15" &16" wheels with clips the hubcap has an inner diameter of 7 5/8"
6 stud 17.5" wheels with clips the 7 5/8" cap did not fit.
8 stud 17.5" wheels with clips the hubcap has an inner diameter of 8 7/8" ( this GMC cap went to duallyjams )

Re: New here: Pics and Hubcaps on 8-lugs?

I have 16" 8 lug and my clip type hubcaps are 8 3/4 inside. The other newer rims are almost the same in size. The newer hubcap will fit over the axle, even though it sticks out.

Re: New here: Pics and Hubcaps on 8-lugs?

I will however have to get new lugs with 1/2-20 threads. They make the newer lugs in different sizes with the outside thread so you can put those little black caps on. They actually hold the newer style cap on.

Good data here, thanks. Finding the old beaten hubcaps to match the truck will be the hardest part.
