What would u guys do?

So i been working on my project 78 stepside, i rebuild the tranny about 3 months ago and fix little things here and there. Here is where my dilema is. I got rust around windshield, i need a core support and front bumper, cab corners need replace, bottom of doors got rust, the threads on the stepside fenders are messed up so my bed sides need replace, i need a tail gate too. What would u guys do? Fix all the stuff i just noted or buy a donor truck or just buy another truck? Help please.

Re: What would u guys do?

I'd go buy a roller, especially if I were in Cali.

Re: What would u guys do?

Look for a parts truck first. Repairing something that rusty is like the guy who claimed to own the same ax that George Washington used to cut down the cherry tree; of course it had 2 or three new heads and a bunch of new handles over the years, but it was the same ax!

Re: What would u guys do?

Depends, are you good at or do you want to learn how to do metal work? You already own it and know what you have. Use it as a learning experience. If you screw it up, relax, it was going to be a donor anyways.

Looks like i got a bit to think about. My thing is finding time to do the work. I got 3 kids and one of them a 6 month old. Maybe i should buy a roller and practice some metal work on the truck i got now. Thanx for all the feed back fellas. Keep them coming tho

Re: What would u guys do?

I've been in that position before, I bought a roller and fix'd it up while I drove the rough one , then when the roller was ready I swap'd in the drive train.

And there it is.
I have five boys. I have six vehicles and four of them are trucks and three of those are projects. Get something that will require less time and youll be light years ahead. Parts for squares are still cheap compared to everything else. Get a donor or sell it and get another one to start over with.

Re: What would u guys do?

Post some picīs. Why would you need to replace the bed sides if the fender nuts are messed up?
With that much rust itīs easier/better to source a cab to replace it, unless you want to have a go at rust repair just for the experience of doing body work. Itīs a good way to learn.
What do you want to do with the car? Search the forum, there are a lot of cool trucks here that may not win any beauty contests when it comes to body work, but when you take a look at what they have hidden under the rolled on paint jobs and dented fenders you will be amazed

Re: What would u guys do?

I've got just what you need- all new sheetmetal and paint, no rust, ready for motor and trans. But, it's in Ga!

I was in your shoes exactly a couple years ago. Even with doing all the body, paint, and suspension, and wiring work myself and not paying any labor costs, plus buying almost all sheetmetal parts at cost, I've still got about $4k just in the body and suspension alone. It's going to be a long road with that truck!
