Calling To All Those That Have A 700R4

I have a 700R4 in my '72 K2500. The shift indicator points a ways past park when in park. When in reverse it reads park. When in second, it reads first and in first it reads a ways past first on the indicator. What do I need to do to solve this?

I need to lessen the amount of travel it has, right? How?

Re: Calling To All Those That Have A 700R4

I do not have a 700R4 installed but I would make one of the pivoting arms shorter, either on shift column or trans shifting arm this should take care of the over travel.

Re: Calling To All Those That Have A 700R4

chevy88 is right. Pictured below is the arm coming off the steering column. This is where I made most of my adjustments when I put in my 700r4. Keep in mind that the 700r4 has 7 detents to the t350 or t400's 6 detents.

700r4: Park, Reverse, Neutral, Overdrive, Drive, 2nd, 1st
t350: Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, 2nd, 1st

When you have it adjusted right, and with the old indicator lens in place, the shift indicator will fall outside the lens when you put it into 1st unless you get an indicator lens made for an O/D trans. All the others will line up though.

Re: Calling To All Those That Have A 700R4

Lokar makes a shift arm that I put on mine and with a little tweaking, I got it to line up well with the overdrive bezel indicator on my column.

Re: Calling To All Those That Have A 700R4

Another issue I incountered was the backup lights coming on at the wrong time. I adjusted by tweaking the switch at the base of the column inside the cab and slightly rotating the entire shaft to get them correct in reverse. These adjustments were in conjunction with the ones on the shifter rod discussed above.

I am pretty sure the lens for a 700R4 is no wider than original. The positions are just spaced closer. If I line park up now, it will only go into 2nd.

I also have this problem. I can't get it to start and have the reverse lights work. I have to choose between the two (very simple choice).

Where can I get one of these?

Also, where can I get an overdrive lens for my non-tilt column?

This has been my experience. Never had a problem.

Re: Calling To All Those That Have A 700R4

I have a 700r4 in my 88 caprice 9c1 cop car and the linkage was so off when i bought it the back up lights came on when it was in park and went off in reverse and so-on. What i did was tighten up the linkage from the column to the tranny, new spring and cotter pins did the trick for me, may work for you, i have the same truck as you 72 GMC k2500 but minus the 700r4 and minus the air condition!

I set mine up so it doesn't hit 1st, no biggy, reverse lights work and it's right from P-D at least.

I would like to be able to use first (I have no idea why). I will look into shortening some part of the linkage.

Re: Calling To All Those That Have A 700R4

Ah, sorry, that's what I was afraid of. Might be worth calling LMC and see if they can get in touch with the mfgr.

I don't know what the difference between a tilt/non-tilt lens would be, but there must be a difference, because that is the only combo (non-tilt 700R4) they DON'T list. Odd.

I guess in order to line up your point, you could make your long-awaited transition to a tilt column earlier than planned....

I already tried a tilt one. They aren't even close. I'd rather have a tach and vac before tilt. I am pretty sure I saw a lens for a non tilt somewhere. I just can't find it.

Re: Calling To All Those That Have A 700R4

I have had a few in my trucks. Usually loose 1st gear, just to get the adjustments right. Always altered the linkage also, legnthen and bend.
