Question Finishing the area behind the seat??????????

I have a 1952 GMC with a bench seat. I removed the original gas tank from the area behind the seat. What can I use to finish off this area starting at the door latch post arround the back? Pictures would be great. Thanks.

what ever you use will have to be custom. I'm not aware of any panels you can buy for this.

Re: Finishing the area behind the seat??????????

There is a guy on this forum with a 57 (i think) truck. I can't remember his user name but he posted some pics of his interior. I copied them because I'm in the process of putting an interior in my 48. I will be saving this back panel for last.

Here are some pics

You just need to be creative. Do some searches on Google. I have seen where people use ABS panels and heat them to form curves.

Good luck
Marc

Re: Finishing the area behind the seat??????????

Here is what I have so far. speaker area in the corners will be built out once I have the speakers. The back panel will be covered with 3/16" plywood. They it will be covered in fake leather to match the seats or complimentary fabric. A covered storage tray will go low and gun rack will be mounted high for guns and fishing poles. My build thread has more detail. If you use the foam it needs to be covered with 2-3 coats of latex enamel paint, the fiberglass resin eats the raw foam!

Re: Finishing the area behind the seat??????????

There are a few companies that makes ABS door panels, panels for behind the seats, kick panels and headliners for our 47-55 trucks but they are very expensive. If I remember correctly they come as bare ABS that need to be covered by you.

There's this company

and this comany

I have a full width speaker box that sits about 8 inches high now but plan to build in storage along with the speaker boxes this go around. The area behind the seats is too good a place to build storage compartments for the things you take along but need to keep out of sight to waste.

Parkwood what did you make your panels out of? Where does a guy go to find the abs panels that can be formed with heat? The curved part is what is giving me trouble. Great pictures!!!!!!!!!!!!!

sorry i don't have better pictures, but i was not there while the interior guy was building the panel behind the seat.. i can tell you it wasn't abs, but more like a very heavy black cardboard that is used in interiors... over that i think he glued 1/4'' white foam that is how you get the little step you see around the opening..
I'm going to call him and let him know your questions and i'll get back to you and let you know what he says..

Re: Finishing the area behind the seat??????????

I have another really good solution for this that is relatively cheap. I've been using sheets of PVC. I buy 4x8 sheets for about $22 from the local sign shop. I think they're sold in mm thickness and I forgot how many mm's it is but it's about 1/8" thick.

I initially tried heating and curving some leftover 1/8" ABS plastic sheet I had but it just wouldn't bend with my heat gun. I tried a piece of leftover PVC board and it is super easy to bend into whatever shape you want. I also used this PVC board before for door panels.

I don't have any pics yet but will post when I'm finished. Gotta get this wiring finished one day first.

Jeff

Re: Finishing the area behind the seat??????????

Forgot to say I'm just using a $12 heat gun from harbor freight. Works great and doesn't take much heat to start bending the PVC.
