What could I get outta that setup if 350 vortec heads work on the 305 bore? I'm thinking at least 250-280 hp w/gobs of torque. Or would a 283 crank work w/the 305 journals? What would it end up in cu in size?
I LOVED my 283/ bored to 291 cid engine in my 66. With a three on the tree and 4.10 gears it was A LOT of fun to twist up. Just make sure youve got a trans that is easily shiftable a bolt in the harmonic dampner and the right rear gears and it should be a real fun piece.

I'd mill those Vortec heads if you're gonna use them on a 305. The chambers should be larger than the 305's and will lower an already low compression ratio.
And the 283 crank is not gonna fit without journal spacers and you'll have to change your rods also. 283's are small journal and 305's are large. A 307 crank would work. It's basically a lrg jrnl 283 crank

As with the gears as Ray said it would be fun, but short lived, you still have a weight issue, you`ll need the low end torque to get it rolling, this data base where ever I picked it up is wrong, I`ve had my short bed fleet on the scales ( hauling materials ) and empty it weighed in at 3840 lbs without my butt in it, with a small block vortec 350/350/373 gears. At 65 I`m tach 2980 rpm with 28 inch tires. If you have a truck scale around in your area, most of the time they will allow you to weigh it if you ask...

Re: dare to be different engine choices?

I know those 2JZ's are awesome engines, but something about putting one in a old Chevy, car or truck, just seems wrong......

As Corts60 mentioned, a 637 GMC V8 - mainly used in the heavy duty truck lines.

Re: dare to be different engine choices?

637!? ive never even heard of this but i think im going to be doing some research lol. 2jz is insane! there was a guy in a hot rod magazine once that had one in a first gen camero and it was pretty sweet. it seems like it should be wrong but its soo right lol i wish that the i6 in my truck could perform half as well as that one!

Re: dare to be different engine choices?

Took my running Olds 403 out and rebuilt it, putting it back in so that my truck will always be a little different. I am down to the frame but should be putting the engine back in after Christmas.

Re: dare to be different engine choices?

man i love the look of that engine. can never go wrong with pontiac olds or buick in my opinion! my old boss had a 57 olds engine that had factory tripower that he was going to put in his 40 ford pickup and it was about the same color as that
