Should I buy this parts truck?
Found a '65 parts truck. I've been in contact with the guy for the past 3 weeks, but life has been too busy to get out there so I haven't gone out to look at it in person. There is no title or vin tag on the cab. The vin number on the frame checks out with the DMV. He bought it at a impound lot sale and was going to part it out, but lost interest. The DMV confirmed the vehicle was abandoned and the police impounded it so his story checks out. They also confirmed it wasn't stolen. The DMV confirmed there is no possible way to get a title for it, so I would take all the parts I needed off of it and part out the rest. The truck is complete except the engine and transmission and he says there's no rust or dents and he says the chrome is in good shape. He's asking $800, but he's had it for sale for 7 weeks so his price should come down.
I bought my '66 short bed truck a couple weeks ago. My truck's body work is all done, but everything else other than suspension is missing. I was planning to go tomorrow to look at it and possible carry it home to take apart and get my truck going. My wife is really concerned about there not being a title and is worried about getting into legal trouble. I would post a picture, but I don't know how to do that. What do you guys think? Should we do it? |

I would do it. Use what you need out of it. Sell off what you're not gonna use, and scrap the rest. If you get it cheap enough, it'll pay for itself and then some.

Re: Should I buy this parts truck?
Did you approach the DMV or does buddy claim he did? Sounds like a perfect parts truck to me. Your not using the cab or frame so the title thing doesn't really apply. Take what you want and send the rest to the Newford breeding ground!

Re: Should I buy this parts truck?
I would get a 6 month premium membership at first then sell all you can on this board! There are a lot of parts a guy can sell and make some good money on and still be fair priced.

Re: Should I buy this parts truck?
First off id make a list of major parts you need and price them out , Most likely after you add it up since your saying your missing alot, that you can justify buying the truck even for $800 even tho cheaper is always better ,and i wouldnt worry about a issue with vin plate if your not ever going to register the truck. So after you strip the truck of parts you need you can take it to the scrapper and get some of your money back,or you could sell the cab lets say for $100 to somebody that can cut it up for patch panels or a extra roof for a chop or things like that, and then you can sell the frame for lets say $100 to someone that wants to build a customized frame but wants to keep thier truck runnung till they are ready to swap everything over all at once , and then the bed and rails for $100,and hood for $100,and doors for $100,bench seat for $100,Thats $600 of your money back right there!! then you still have tons of other parts like tailgate, windshield, back cab glass, inner fenders, inner door panels, window regulators, gas tank,Gauges, and so on and so on......You could even sell everything i said for $50 a item and make half to most your money back...it all depends on how you want to go about it and how many parts you need and what you really need and how long your willing to hang on to parts and deal with selling them to people ,or just taking the left overs for scrap money. I know if it has Good front fenders that you can make some good money off of just them!

Re: Should I buy this parts truck?
Thanks for all the advice. Went out to pick up the parts truck yesterday. The truck is all complete, just a bit rough around the edges. Drove all the way out there and the U-haul was all out of trailers. I never knew they needed a reservation. Guess it was a lesson learned. So I get to go out there this coming Friday 2 days before Christmas and pick it up then. I'm stripping off the parts I need Christmas eve morning and hopefully selling the rest really quickly.
Thanks again, Kevin C
