I happen to work in an auto electric rebuild shop and have done hundreds of the starters you're refering to. If its the side by side, long and short bolt pattern you likely have a 3664 unit(that's the number a parts store would have the unit listed under). Its a dep remy 10 mt. They do not differin nose length. The throw of the drive is adjustable with shims between the drive end housing and the solenoid. As far as aftermarket gear reduction starters, none better than delco remy gm factory equipment. Go to your local parts supplier and ask for a starter by the number 6470(this is a pg260m type). It is identical in bolt pattern, but you will need new bolts as these have shorter housings, so shorter bolts are necessary. it is possible that you may need to shim it away from the block/flywheel, if so use a standard starter shim kit. I performed this same upgrade on my truck and it worked flawlessly. Mine was the staggered pattern for the larger flywheel(168 teeth if I remember right) so for anyone wanting to upgrade the staggered pattern buy a 6449 unit. This unit is used on gms 8.1L/502 big block. It is eqivelent to the 6470, only the drive end housing is differnt. All the same internals otherwise. So lots of power. Small package and cheaper than aftermarket whiz bang snazzy starters. Best of luck.

I just bought a starter for my 454. The parts guy suggested it. We looked up a mid-90's 454 and he pulled the starters for them. They are very small and gear reduction, I believe. I used it on my 70's 454. The parts guy had done the same thing on his 80's smallblock after his headers were cooking the original starter. Not cheap, but what good is the whole truck if it wont start?

Sure thing. Hope it works out for you. Don't try stacking washers on your bolts if you can't find short ones. Had a guy do that and it destroyed the starter. Too much leverage. If you can't find a gear reduction starter, your 10 mt can be upgraded to a super torque by a rebuild shop. Just make sure its going to be a super torque cause there's low and high versions, but the super is well super and not factory option.
