need help with 98 chevy truck with vortec to carb motor

I just picked uip a 98 chevy truck and was planning on putting a carbed 350 in it with a/c since it was a 6 cylnder truck.

prvious owner swapped a carb 350 in it but the wire harness is cut to hell there is random wires running to th efuse box under the hood, im guessing gaugaes and ignition switch was not working since there is aftermarket gauges and a push button on the dash. (had i looked closer i probably wouldnt have bought this thing)

any way i wanna make this in to a daily driver and have a few older 350s laying around and was just gonna put one in there. but id prefer to do it the irght way where all th efactory guages work and i can start it with the key lol.

I know 98-99 have something with the column some kinda anti theft deal that needs th ecomputer if i remeber right its been a while since ive messed with one of these trucks.

I plan on getting a new factory wiring harness because i just dont know where to start on this one.

I want to use all the factory guages and hook up the a/c. Supposidly there is somehting with the ac that uses a different plug on the dryer bottle and compressor or so i was told.

Id also like to use this column but idk if its possible i have a column from a 95 that should fit in there if i rember right.

has anoybody done this swap that can give me a few pointers?

If you look under the column there is a large commector look for the heavy gauge yellow wire( verify with test light by turning key to crank position). Cut this wire past the connector near the fire wall, lengthen and connect to starter. For best results add a relay, terminal 30 is wired to the battery or junction block (fused), 85 is a ground, 86 is a switch (the yellow wire ), and 87 to the starter. These trucks have several safety features you have to bypass. Hope this helps let me know if you need any other help.

Also check to make sure all the fuses are in place.Depending how bad he butchered the harness you may be better off starting with a new one. The fuel gauge wont work if the pcm isnt getting 12v, fuel pump circuit wont work if the oil sender is not connected (orange, brown, and white wired connector if I remember correctly), speedo can be wired to one of the abs wheel sensors to work. Haynes manuals have excellent wiring schematics that are detailed and easy to understand.

thanks, Yes I am gonna start with a new harness under the hood and under the dash there is just way to many cut wires to even start with.

So to make most of the gauges work and the ac i am gonna need to leave the computer?

Sorry for the delay but yes you will need the computer for the gauges and i stil could'nt get the ac to work without directly wiring it to a toggle switch which will ultimately fry the compressor because it is suppose to cycle on and off. Just get a new harness and eliminate what you don't intend to run buy the manual to get the detailed schematics.

Re: need help with 98 chevy truck with vortec to carb motor

I have a complete engine wire harness and dash harness out of a 97 excab chevy hanging on my shop wall...truck was wrecked in the left front door and i drove the truck before taking it apart.

I can do it for $175 shipped. (size of box) and its a lot of wires. truck was a 350 vortec. with dual airbags.

I would just go get a vortec motor and put it back stock...they have tons of power and the new gas they sell now will eat carb's up...

I part these out all the time..
