96 4x4 4L60e trans in 95 4x4 truck

I am hoping on eof you can guide ne in a direction that does not face a wall. I have a 95 GMC z71 with 235,000 miles. It was using oil and I finally decided a new motor was in order so I picked up a low mile long block 350 TBI. I hate to do things twice, so I figured it was the right time to update the trans. I checked with trans shop and they said that I could use any single piece case 4l60e from 95-98. Found a low mile 96 out of a wreck and have been fighting it ever since. It will not come out of failsafe as near as I can figure. That is to say I have reverse, and I believe third. I can get second manually and then third from there. Is there a diagram that will show me where the wires from the trans go so that I can eliminate faults or to verify signals are getting to the trans? I have not found any bad fuses and used all of my old sensors that worked on the old motor except for the temp switch in the head and the temp sensor in the manifold. I have not found much more than opinions on this swap that vary greatly. Any solid information or guidance would be appreciated. Thanks

to the board

you need to change the wire harness in the trans with the orignal 1995 harness..

95 on the interchange is all by itself.

you can do this in the truck..I would try that 1st...

the 96 trans should be a removable bellhousing and will bolt up,but totally wrong trans. not showing to work.

96-98 4x4 4L60E are all the same. 95 was last year of 1 piece case 4L60E

good old gm one year only parts..LOL

Not a lot of help, but I went through the same thing with a '93 that we were trying to drop a '95 tranny into. Ended up going with a 700R4 after we fought it for a long time. Sold the truck, the kid that bought it scrounged up a '93 4L60E, bolted it in and it worked fine.

This 96 is a one piece case It is physically the same as my 95. Same casting marks, number of pins in the connectors and has the 'PWM' stamp on the pump. The only thing that I found different was at the harness connector that was still connected at the Black controller. It was cut and still in the controller asnd I noticed that it had an additional wire that my connector does not. If I remember correctly the number stamped on the side rail along the top of the pan is 24202520

Is the harness really the difference? I have read that it could be the 3-2 solenoid. My biggest concern before I get too far is to identify if signals are getting to the trans. I would like to start by finding what points in the harness, PCM or components I can test to verify everything before I start making changes. Thanks
