1 ton dually crew cabs with the straight 6:

If you have a dually crew cab with the straight 6, please list the following:


1) The GVWR of the truck----should be on the door sill.

2) The GCWR (if known) and towing capacity of the truck.

3) What rear gear ratio you got.

4) What is, to the best of your ability, the mpg when unloaded and the mpg when trailering and approximate weight of the trailer. Also is the trailer open or box?


Essentially what i'm trying to do is get acceptable fuel economy when unloaded----because i want to use this for daily driving as well, or at least have the option to. But i also want decent high towing capacity. i would define decent towing capacity as the ability to tow a 5000 lbs trailer at 65 mph and not even know that the trailer is there AND be able to maintain 65 mph when going up most reasonable hills without even breaking a sweat.

Yes, i want to have my cake and eat it too. But i don't just want cake, i want extreme chocolate frosting with sprinkles on top of it AND i want to eat it in a sauna with jets.

The reason why i'm not considering diesel is because i'm not familiar with them----the pump and related paraphenalia especially. But also because i think the initial cost is too high considering i won't be doing THAT much driving.

6 bangers are under estimated greatly. They don't do very well in the fuel department but they seem to pull well and last a long time.

292s are torque monsters.

I've only seen one 6 cylinder CC dually. A 1973 in a junkyard years ago.

I would think they are pretty rare. I called about one for sale a year ago. It was a crew cab dually 4x4. I think it was an 81, but not sure.

a straight six is a great engine. what they lack in horsepower is made up in torque. you have to know that dump trucks and semi's used gas straight 6's for a long time. they are rare to find in larger Chevrolets though

if it was that easy you would be able to pick from thousands of factory built trucks with those options. I have a soft spot in my heart for a 292. but thats way out of bounds. they will do ok on fuel intill you take them out of their rpm range. then you pay the piper. mine with 4:56's would pull that trailer all day. at 50-55 mph tops. unloaded at 65 it was wound up and getting 11mpg. it could get as high as 19mpg unloaded at 50mph. I want a 1/2 ton with 3:08's just for freeway cruising.

Update: i want cake with thick chocolate frosting and sprinkles AND i want to eat it while inside a hot tub with jets AND i want to be professionally massaged while watching a good movie or documentary. But the massuse must wear earplugs and the view from the screen must be blocked from her view. The reason is that if this wasn't so then her attention(at least partially) would be taken off me and on to movie; i want all the attention on me.

(if i told you i am currently single and likely to stay that way for a while would this not surprise you........)

I hope you are gonna turbo charge that v6 or something, because you are goona kill it with a crew cab dually. You will also hate yourself for driving it. I could not imagine any way a v6 would get better mileage that a 350 or LS motor in a truck that heavy. One more thing the 4.3 v6 ain't no 292 straight six in any form or fashion. The 292 is a torque monster, the v6 has little tiny guts that are better suited for an S10.

You certainly can do what you want and I'm all about being different, but I just don't think this is a wise move. You want mileage think cummins 4bt or something.

This. You might not know a lot about diesels, but with a Cummins, you don't need to know a lot. Get fuel from the tank to the injection pump, get power to a shut-off solenoid. That's it, brother! And 4bt's are cheap. They are all over the place in Frito-Lay trucks, with either some 4 speed, or a good old fashioned GM TH400. These trucks go for $3000-3500, from the few I've looked at. The body is aluminum, so figure 2000 pounds times what ever scrap aluminum is going for is money back in your pocket, and a lot of these trucks have eight lug 19.5 wheels that you may want for hauling or you can sell because there are a bajillion people who would like to have them.


Or step your game up with a 6bt and a allison...

I got a 6 in mine a cummins 6bt and it is getting around 19 to 21 empty
