Acid suggestions
hey guys i have a set of 15x18s that i need to polish. ive heard great things about using acid to clean them. ive read something about auto shine wire wheel acid cleaner! however i cant find anywhere that sells it. Does anyone else out there have any suggestions of other kinds of acid based cleaners are out there......

I'm in the same boat. Bought a set of 70's slots that need restored. Can't find the Auto Shine Acid Wash anywhere. I had heard good things about Eagle 1 Mag Cleaner (acid based), so I bought a bottle and tried it without much luck. I had some phosphoric acid in the garage so I tried that too. Between the two I was able to get some of the oxidation off, but not as much as I'd like. The Eagle 1 stuff might work for you, depending on how cruddy your wheels are. I'm going to try it again soon, but will leave the product on for a couple of minutes instead of just 30 seconds as directed. Hopefully that will do the trick.

hey guys my uncle can get some muriatic acid from his job. ive heard this stuff is super strong so im very scared that it will kill my rims. What are your guys take on it? is it possible to use and dilute?

I know that muratic acid and phosphoric acid are both used in the very strong acid based wheel cleaners. However, I don't know what percentage of each is used or how much is "safe". I would certainly be VERY hesitant to use that stuff full strength. My guess is that these wheel cleaners are very diluted.

Muriatic acid is wicked stuff and I wouldn't go near a set of aluminum wheels with it ! I made the mistake when I was younger of putting a carburetor in 1 part muriatic acid to 10 parts water and literally only about 3/4 of the carburetor emerged hours later. There is info on here about cleaning billet wheels with the acid , not sure how different that is. Jmdero is a member here who does detailing and he helped me out with mine. Search "how to get oxidation off billet wheels"

Muratic acid is used in many/most of the strong acid-based wheel cleaners. So, it CAN be used effectively on wheels. But my guess is that the concentrations in those cleaners is not that strong and the directions generally say to let it sit for 30 seconds. I used it on some heavily oxidized wheels and only left it on for 2 minutes. Putting soft aluminum in strong acid for hours at a time, I think you can probably expect to have nothing left afterwards!

The acid most people refer to is called aluma brite. It will remove any oxidation, stains, tar, and will also turn your wheels white. Once or twice a year we take our peterbilts to any truck wash and have them acid wash it to clean them up. It removes all wax and really cleans up the trucks, the only down fall is that you have to repolish everything, but that is the point of the acid wash. Once aluminum is acid washed and pure, you will be able to polish it back to a chrome like shine. You can have a truck wash acid them for you or any pressue wash company like Hotsy or Landen usually stocks it
